Are you buying a monitor: Yes (unless smaller tv will work as a monitor for awhile)

Parts to Upgrade: Everything, have a near dead laptop
Do you need to buy OS: Yes, Windows 7
Please note that if you're using an OEM license of Windows, you will need a new one when buying a new motherboard.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts:
Local Shop - http://otvtech.com
Canadian PC Part Picker http://ca.pcpartpicker.com
Location: Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada

Parts Preferences: Intel, Nvidia
Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: No, have no clue what it is, so probably do not need it.

Your Monitor Resolution: Would like to purchase a 1080p

Additional Comments: Needs to be upgradable. Ok if it starts off low-end and over the next year or two better parts are added as long as it can play Final Fantasy: A Realm Reborn, and run movies to the tv via HDMI cable. Also needs to be wireless since there is no hookups where it would be kept. Insides do not need to be super powerful, but a shiny big tower with LEDs that match lightsaber would be cool.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Last laptop in the house is dying.

We have never put a computer together so the simplest/easiest way possible would be great. Thank you.

This meets budget, and gives you some upgrade potential, like the new broadwell cpu's, next year.

Hi and thank you so much for this, I am sorry for the slow responce back but sick atm. I have a couple questions I hope you dont mind my asking.
How soon would I need to upgrade the motherboard or can it handle i7 and something like the Geforce GTX series that can handle 4K? My boyfriend and I get rather frustrated with a notice from the Sony TV we hookup to now that is 4K that announces that we are not running the best resolution setting from computer to tv, as tv being 2nd monitor.

So in the long run we both would like to have it built to be 4K compatible, without having to change too many things to often. Do you mind confirming that?

I wonder if I should have said home entertainment pc?

The motherboard will be able to handle a GTX and an i7. I severely doubt you will need an i7 ever. Only one game (which you are still fine with just going with an i5 anyhow) comes to mind that uses it, so don't get an i7.

Now this is the sad part. You won't be able to play any games on high settings (maybe just maybe on medium to low settings) with your current setup using 4K display with actual 4K resolution. You will at least need a GTX 970 ($400 CAD) or equivalent to play games on a 4K display. And the frames per second is still not that great. You would need 2 GTX 970s on SLI (Quick understanding: SLI or Crossfire is where you link 2 GPUs together for increase GPU power. This is not the best description, but it may help you understand it). This would require pretty much a complete re-haul on the pc I speced out (which was more of a budget gaming pc instead of a 4K system). I would recommend at least a $1500 budget minimum for this kind of set up.

Here is what I would say you would need (please note this is an example you could do it for a little less)

This setup will allow you to play on 1080p display pretty well. Pretty much most games on ultra setting should be doable.

Thank you so much for your help with this..

With this build that you suggested, what would you suggest we do if we kept the CPU and Motherboard, but downgraded the video cards for awhile? What could we use instead so that we could later on just change for the GTX 970's? I would like to keep cost down, but make it simple to upgrade it later on, without having to upgrade everything else.

Again, thank you

Well no. I just did that one real quick. You should do some more research or maybe save up a bit more and get a 1080p setup to play games. I honestly am not sure if you need a rig like that at all.
