Alright community, please be nice to me as this is my first post and I am not too familiar with replacing and upgrading CPU's.

Anyway, here is the problem/question:
My desktop I have now in my dorm is a (HP h8-1110)
Current HP Desktop
that I installed a new power supply and graphics card to last year. It still has stock cpu.
CPU IS: Intel(R) core i5-2400 CPU @3.10GHz
The question is whether this CPU is compatible with a Dell Inspiron 530
Dell Inspiron 530 intel pentium OYK196
that is an older model definitely, and I think it ultimately comes down to the connections on the socket with the stock motherboard of the Inspiron as well as if it will fit within the case, which should be fine if I'm not mistaken?
I am also thinking of upgrading the i5 in my desktop now to an i7 quadcore this season by trying to snag a good deal through newegg.
ie: Intel Quadcore i7
So this is another questions in itself whether or not this processor will fit into my current desktop system.

I would appreciate an answer to whether or not the i5 I have now will fit into my older dell inspiron, if I need a new motherboard to support it, and what the general cost would be to see if its even worth it. (Possibly a link would help here)
Oh, and also dumb question as to whether or not I would have to upgrade the power supply?

Thanks a lot for your time and saving me hassle,
Dan

The Dell uses a socket 775 motherboard that isn't compatible with your i5-2400. You can only install a processor that's on the supported list and the i7-3770K isn't. It will fit in the socket, but it may not run. The fastest officially supported processor is the Core i7-2600 and you can probably find a used one on eBAY.

Upgrading the Dell with a new motherboard could be done if it's a standard mATX case, but rewiring of the front panel may be required.
Hi,

you cannot just upgrade, you need to buy new mobo and memory.

How strong it the new PSU ?

If you have a strong enough PSU (at least 500 watt)

a core i5 + mobo and memory will cost about 450-500 $ depending on the model and how much ram you buy.

Thanks for the quick reply!

So, you are saying I need new memory, along with motherboard for the Dell Inspiron?

Alas I cannot remember the PSU I bought to support my graphics card :/ however I do know that the minimum power that I could have is in fact 500W on my HP.

As I stated though, I already have the i5 (its in my HP right now). This question I am asking is about swapping this existing part for an i7 and putting it in my older Dell Inspiron system.

I see. So this is in fact a bit more intuitive than I would have optimally anticipated. Nevertheless, thanks for the input!

Yes I do realize now that the socket is 1155, this is my fault for not looking it up. I may just choose to try and upgrade the processor in the Dell Inspiron with one of the listed compatible upgrades, but this system is significantly slower than the HP I have. I'm wanting to experiment ideas of options to upgrade it, and if I have to make a few small purchases to do so entirely, then so be it.

I would ultimately be worried that even the upgrade would still leave it much slower in comparison.
