My Desktop Sata drive stops being detected sometimes.

My Seagate 500 SATA hard drive stopped being detected today, both in windows 7 of my desktop and in the BIOS. However, when I unplug it and plug it back in, it is detected again. I can transfer files and everything then. But it doesn't last long, within an hour it stops being detected again. I swapped the SATA cable and port but no change. The only thing I haven't tried is swapping the power cable, but would that even matter? Why does it work at times but not at other times? Could the PSU be the problem? It’s a 600watt Antec that I bought almost 3 years ago. Perhaps I need a more powerful one?

My rig’s specs are:

CPU AMD FX 8350
Motherboard M5A97 R2.0
Graphics Card Radeon 7870
Storage 6 Hard drives. 2 external USB 1TB drives that are powered by the USB port on the PC. 4 internal drives of which 1 is a 64 SSD, 3HHD ranging from 500GB to 1TB.

So what’s causing my problem?

Hi there Eran Mayshar,

The first thing you should do is to back up your data. After that, you can just test the drive with brand specific software and see whether it will show something. It is possible that the drive is failing.
It will also be a good idea to swap the power cable.

That might be a possible sign of permanent failure. Since you are still able to access your drive occasionally, I would suggest to back up important data that you have from that drive to another good working media to avoid possible data loss.

You are having issues with with only that drive. If the PSU is causing the problem, my guess would be that not only this drive should disconnect. That is why you should fist swap the cable. If the problem persists, you can run a testing software.
