i need help figuring out what cable I need to go 300 feet to my modem. It will be outdoors, as I said I have to go 300 feet from modem to computer. I have no ideas about what cable to get (cat 5/5e/6) or anything else any suggestions on where and wht to get? I live in Southern California if thT helps, but ordering online is no problem.

If the cable is elevated you can use indoor cable but it will not last more than a few years mostly because the sun destroys the casing. If you plan to bury it you either need outdoor cable or you need conduit. The ground will eat plastic casing very quickly. Outdoor cable is always recommended but you will have to do the cost estimate to see if replacing it every couple years. You can get gig speeds with cat5e cable but cat6 might be cheaper but it does not go faster or farther so buy the cheapest.

I know. It's actually 260 ft, but 300 would give me leeway.

would it be possible to put a powered switch or repeater about halfway down? that would give you 2 segments well within the limits of Cat5/6.

regarding wireless, it's OK to have stuff in the way, as long as it's not creating electrical fields and/or not made of dense material. meaning trees and stuff like that might be ok.
