I've done a few builds now, but I have never really done this before. So I am going to be building for my friend an we are going to be using the hard drive from his old computer, and HP desktop. I was just wondering if the OS (windows 8) will transfer to the new computer, so I won't have to buy a copy of Windows.

This is incorrect. A preinstalled OS is in fact tied to the original motherboard.
And there is no "5 times" specification.

Now....will it activate? Maybe. That is entirely up to Microsoft. They are under no obligation to allow that.
Does he have the license key? With Win8, that is embedded in the motherboard. The motherboard he is not using anymore.

Microsoft licensing here...

You will have 2 issues:

1. It almost certainly will not boot on the new hardware. Fresh install

2. Licensing. Was that Windows 8 a fresh install or preinstalled from HP?

oh, and #3. If you do get around #1 & 2, now you have an HP PC with no OS.

the OP said he was building his friend a PC and reusing the old hdd. all he has to do is call intell and tell them he built a new pc and is using the old hdd and the old pc will no longer be using the license. you can install it on a new pc up to i believe 5 times as long as you never have more than one active at the same time

Plus, it probably will require a reinstallation.
