can I put RAM of different sizes?

My motherboard has 2 RAM slots and supports maximum of 4 gb of RAM. 2GB in each slot. I wanted to know whether I can put 2gb in one slot and 1 gb in another slot? Plz reply..

Yes you can. While it is preferred to have the same frequency and timing because of stability, if you buy another stick that doesn't match, the PC will downclock the faster module to match the slower stick.

Personally, I would just buy a 2x2 kit that are designed and tested to work together which will remove the possibility of stability issues.
