Building gaming PC need suggestions

So I am wanting to build a decent gaming PC but I don't need the best of everything(I hope lol ).
So far I have a Corsair 750 watt PSU and an ASUS GTX 970. Do I need an i7 to max out the ability of my GPU? What all am I going to need for a complete build. My budget is about $500 more.

lol, no you don't need an i7 to max your gpu out. Any intel core i5 sandy bridge-Haswell quad core will work.

Thanks for the answer! I currently have an AMD a10 6700 3.5 ghz with 8gb of ram. IS that a good processor compared to an I5?

I5 should be way faster than your A10, A10 only equals an i3 in performance so an i5 will be a good boost in performance.

See that's what I thought, I should have been more detailed. I bought a build from best buy about 8 months ago but now someone else needs that computer so I am going to just build one with the aftermarket componets I already have(detailed above) and pretty much everything else. So I don't want a bottleneck at all and the main games I play are total war and some First person shooters.
