can you put a 2 pin fan on a 3 pin connector?

yes you can and no it won't. that 3rd pin is just to show you how fast the fan is going. 4 Pin fans give you the option to control the speed of the fan and 2 Pin is just power so fan runs at full speed and you don't know how fast it is spinning
