I currently have an iPad 2. Obviously, it's not fast or up to date in any means and it's time I upgrade. I've been thinking of switching to Andriod. With new the new Andriod Lollypop, the customizability and how fast andriod is growing has really caught my eye. Here are my current tablets I'm interested in, please suggest more!

iPad Air
iPad Air 2
Nexus 9
Nvidia SHIELD
Samsung Galaxy pro

My price range is 300-500, not willing to pay much more.

My opinions:

iPad Air:
I love the feel of iOS, and how all apps are optimized for my screen. It felt really overpriced at $499 but now that it's at $399 I'm totally considering it

iPad Air 2:
Very fast, would last for a long time. Little spends for me

Nexus 9:
Stock andriod sounds nice, but what are your options on stuff like touch wiz? I really don't mind it. Just the fact I get updates slower and rooting is harder annoys me. Nvidia Tegra K1 looks AMAZING, ps3 level graphics? Yes. Small screen, wish they made a 10 inch

Shield:
Again, insanely fast and cheap. Tiny screen though

Galaxy tab pro:
Big screen :), pretty good specs, expensive, confusing all the variations (pro, S, note, 8.9, 9.7,10.7, MAKE IT STOP!) slower updates?

Any opinions are much appreciated, thanks for advice!

Nexus 9 is stock android. Touchwiz is for samsung tablets.
I noticed that Chainfire said it may be harder to root on Android 5.0 due to increasingly effective security measures and stricter enforcement of SELinux. But that is for the developer preview, it may be easier on the final release.

Shield is nice and is cheaper than the price of a nexus 9. If you have a geforce pc you could essentially steam games to your tablet. Not sure if the Nexus 9 will have that as well.

It depends on what you do. The nexus 9 is good if you want a cheap tablet that will last you a long time as you get all the updates when they are released.

If you want productivity then get the galaxy tab pro as it has a sylus which means you can use it to take notes. The updates are slower than the nexus but that shouldn't be too much of an issue as their range improves on every iteration.

If you are a gamer then the shield is good if you have a good pc but the nexus is probably better as touchwiz tends to slow down their system.

As for the ipads, they are good if you want to stick with ios. The only real difference between them is the screen size. You will know which size is the best for you.

It's debatable whether the nexus is cheap. It is priced a bit higher than previous nexus device. Though it does features some premium specifications.
Since nexus 9 has a K1, it could also stream games like the Shield but maybe Nvidia blocked it. We have to wait for the review to see.
The shield is kinda old compared to the upcoming tablets to be released.

Thanks for the opinions. I forgot to mention, I'm worried about switching to Andriod because I've heard apps don't look and run well on tablets, is this true? I think I'm looking at nexus vs samsung. I want stock andriod and a nice chip but the bigger screen from the pro is really tempting. Any final advice?

I don't think there any stock android over 10 inches - the nexus 10, unless you debloat a samsung tablet to the point it is almost stock android.
The android 5.0 is supposedly help with scaling issues with apps and movies but until it has fully released, it is unknown right now.
If you want a 12 inch, then maybe go for samsung. The other more expensive options is Microsoft Surface Pro 3.
