Hi there,
So this is my first post here and therefoer apologies if I sound like a bit of an idiot in advance!

I recently purchased a Samsung 840 evo 120gb SSD. I wish to migrate Windows 7 from my HDD to this so that I can boot from the SSD. However, I have a lot of games/software installed on my HDD and was wondering if there was a way to migrate Windows to the SSD but keep all my software installed on my hard drive. I understand this may sound like it's just me being lazy and I should do a fresh Windows install but I have a lot of games that would need re-downloading and re configuring, and also software that I no longer have the product keys for.

Thanks in advance,

Richard

Hey there, Richard!

The best thing when switching to SSD is performing a fresh install of the OS on it.
This way you avoid migrating/cloning all your dump, temp and junk system files which can affect your system at some point of time. However, if you insist on cloning/migrating I would suggest to use a software for this.
There are several of those out there, I personally prefer Acronis True Image http://www.acronis.com/en-eu/
It lets you select what you clone and is also pretty easy to use.

No matter what you decide to do, my advice is to reconsider the fresh install of the OS.
As for everything else, when it comes to transferring data in any way, the best case practice is to always backup before tempering with files. So I'd...

Hope this helped. :)

Hey! Thanks for the reply - in regards to the software you mentioned, do these allow the migration of the OS and keep software on the HDD? Or as phillip mentioned, is this not possible?

Cheers

There is one application that purports to be able to move only the OS.
Paragon Migrate http://www.paragon-software.com/technologies/components/migrate-OS-to-SSD/
Not free. I've never used it, so can't speak to how well it works.

As others have said, a clean install is by far the best option.
