Hey guys I just got a Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 980 to upgrade from my old MSI GTX 580 Lightning Xtreme, and my computer won't start with the new card. I'm running a Corsair AX850 power supply, and a Gigabyte G1.Assassin 2 motherboard which I'm assuming are the likeliest culprits, I updated the motherboard to the latest version it allowed me to which I think is 12r, and it won't let me upgrade further because it says I have an outdated utility and I can't seem to upgrade that, so I'm stuck.

My computer flashes the lights for a second when I start it and then dies, but runs just fine with my old card. I thought the AX850 would run the card easily so I'm guessing it's either faulty, or my motherboard doesn't like the new card. Anyone have any experience with running new cards on the g1.assassin 2 motherboard?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds honestly just like a faulty GPU. The 900 series are actually really power efficient.. And a 850w is perfectly fine for it. As I know a reference 980 needs about 30-35a on the 12v rail. And my 780 needs about 65 LOL. So I dont think that's the issue. I would download the GPU driver uninstaller. Make sure you run it it safe mode when doing so. If it still doesnt work after completely removing the previous driver and reinstalling a new one (even if its the same one) then I would request for a RMA. If it still does it after the new card arrives, then you can assume its not the card.

Link to the uninstaller.

The drivers shouldn't really affect anything at this point.
Considering the system will not POST with the GPU installed it could be a few things.

Your PSU - which is a quality PSU, so most likely not this.
Motherboard
GPU

Odds are it is the GPU. RMA would be the best option for now.

If you receive another GPU that isn't POSTing, then look to the mother board.

The 580 requires more power than the 980 from what I found on NVIDIA's website.

my new gtx 980 did the same thing,, tried everything,, finally updated my old bios with latest version.there were about 8 newer bios files than the one i had.. lol.. i had the original version . pc booted first time after that and card runs great.., oh i have p9x79 pro mobo.. and 850 power supply

also pc worked fine with my spare gtx 285... my gtx 580 went bad after 3 yrs,, so i threw my old 285 in and pc worked fine,, pc would boot with 580 but only if no drivers were installed.. i would get unable to reset display drivers when drivers were installed with the 580..

I'd suspect a compatibility issue with a UEFI GPU and your motherboard BIOS. The GPU says it has Dual-BIOS, see if one version of BIOS on the GPU is legacy and try that.
Else, work on upgrading your motherboard BIOS to the latest.
