ASUS P5LD2-SE Cpu upgrade

Solution
If everything works well enough for you now, no reason to buy a new CPU. I'd do what you said at the end and save the money for a new build down the road.
You can check the supported CPU's on the motherboards support page here:

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5LD2_SE/HelpDesk_CPU/

The fastest processor you can upgrade to would be the core 2 extreme X6800. Unfortunately it doesn't look like any of the core 2 quad CPU's are supported. The C2 X6800 is actually a lower wattage CPU than your current one so if your current CPU cooler is adequate, it should perform well with a fresh application of thermal paste.

The X6800 is available for ~$50-$60 USD used.

hey tnx for replay
so how much this one is faster than my current one?
sory i am not good in hardware but this one is 2.93GHz is not my current one stronger?
but of cource this one is dual core but my current cpu has only one core

The core2 duo is a lower clock rate, but the architecture is significantly different along with the dual cores. So not only will it have twice the physical cores which work much better than 2 threads from a hyperthreaded single core, but it is able to do more per-clock cycle than the P4 661 you currently have.
The larger cache sizes on the core 2 duos also make a huge improvement in performance.

The core 2 duo will perform probably close to 3x-4x better than your current 661, especially in applications that are multi-threaded, running multiple programs at the same time etc etc, it really has no downsides.

It's the same as if you took a single core of the latest processor and compared it to an older single core cpu. The older one just can't do as much, even while operating at the same frequency.

tnx
is it possible that some cpuies work with my motherboard that are not on that list?
i mean can i use a newer cpu that work but it will be not 100 % stable?
maybe should i take my pc to someone to test cpus on it and see which one will work?
also if i change the cpu do i need to reinstall windows?

It is possible that some of the core 2 quads will work on your motherboard, but since none of them are listed, it's a long shot. Past a Core 2 Quad (quad core CPU) working, the X6800 is the fastest supported processor. The CPU's aren't really a issue about being stable, but just the bios of the motherboard supporting them, they either work or they don't.

I don't know about testing the computer with other CPU's somewhere. The chips are pretty old and most places won't have anything like that in stock.

If you change your cpu, you don't need to do anything to the computer other than possibly needing to update the bios.
