PS4 vs PC Upgrade

My current PC specs are:

CPU: FX 8120 overclocked to 4GHz
RAM: 8GB 1333MHz DDR3
SSD: 120GB PNY XLR8
HDD: 2TB Samsung
GPU: Zotac GTX 770 2GB
PSU: TX750 v2 Corsair

I have a budget of around $500 and I was thinking about getting a new motherboard and a Core i5 4690k but for the price of that I could get a PS4. I've always wanted a good Intel system and I'd love to have a new Core i5 4690K processor but I also would love to have a PS4. My FX 8120 still does surprisingly well in the latest games so I'm not 100% sure if I should upgrade it yet but at the same time I'm not sure how much longer it will last for gaming. I also really would like to have the new WWE 2K15 game and I don't think it's coming to PC but it's definitely going to be on PS4. Help me decide which to get.

Well it really does depend on whether your machine is struggling. Do you think it will last until you can afford another $500 to spend on an I5? If so, then get a PS4. If it turns out after 12 months you dont use your PS4 too much, you can sell it and get a good hefty amount to go towards your I5.

Keep in mind you might have some more overheards for buying games for the PS4 - so you might end up splitting you cash on PC v PS4 titles. But more choice is never a bad thing!

^All of that would blow the 500 price point away.

Why do you want a PS4? Because WWE is coming out on it (which, buying a system for one game is a terrible idea)? Do you play on computer more or would you rather play on console? As someone with both, I definitely use my PC more for gaming, but have been switching off to play The Evil Within.

I would personally grab a new mobo and cpu. Can't go wrong with an i5 and Z8/97.

Get one of your affectionate others to get you a PS4 for Christmas. You can wait til then, not to mention the fact that there are STILL not many games the PS4 has that tops what you can get on PC. Matter of fact, the only title I can think of offhand is Destiny and Kill zone.

In my opinion, FX8120+GTX770 is really enough for all todays newest games.
You can OC your FX8120 if you want.
There is no real urgent need to upgrade it now.

As for getting a PS4,
You can do more with PC and the games look better on PC.
Your PC does not need urgent upgrade for now.
There are games only for PS4 and there games only for PCs.
There is nothing holding you back from getting both.
I had once PC and PS3 at the same time.
I would say, get the PS4.
Upgrade your PC next year or the year after.

Yes, because it is obviously consoles ruining the gaming industry and not the consumers buying the consoles. Something is working if sales are doing so well, eh?

A way to look at this is to toss that 500 bucks on to your savings as your PC is already decently powerful. However, the statement "your PC is already better than the consoles" should be taken with a grain of salt as most games are tailored towards consoles with the perfect balance of performance and quality. On PCs, you deal with incompatability issues, stuttering, etc. Don't believe me? Buy a 400 dollar computer, buy a PS4, and a copy of Battlefield 4 on each. Tell me which you'd prefer.

I said his PC is better than the consoles, not that a $400 PC will be better than the consoles...

Did his setup cost $400? I dunno, you ask him.

I agree the consumers are in part responsible for ruining games. You could argue the games are fine because they sell well and are catered to the vast majority of players, but I'm a PC-only guy who is not one of those lazy sheeple.

Just look at Ubisoft that massive cancerous tumor in PC gaming. Microsoft going around bribing devs isn't any good either.

Anyway, back to the OP. You sure you don't want a beer?

I've been playing The Evil Within on my PC and WWE 2K15 is the only game I want for PS4 right now. I would probably still get most of my games for PC even if I had a PS4. So it looks like the PS4 would mostly be a waste for me if I got it. So it looks like I'll probably just upgrade my PC. I could still get the WWE game for my PS3 if it doesn't come to PC. Nobody has money to buy me a PS4 for Christmas so that can't happen.

The money has to be spent on something I want now because if I wait it will quickly be siphoned away for other things and I won't be able to get something I want with it.

I believe Ubisoft said that they will lock the PCs at 30fps because "its more cinematic". The obvious reason is because consoles cannot handle it so they dont want the console gamers to know that their new system is useless

I have an Asrock 880g pro3 motherboard and I have a Hyper 212+ cooler. My motherboard doesn't officially support piledriver CPU's but they do work on it. And I can't overclock very far due to a 4+1 phase VRM. So either way I'm going to want a new motherboard. Though an FX 83XX CPU uses less power so I might be able to overclock a little further with it on my current motherboard.

Or, since the 770 is still a great card, sell your cpu and mobo then grab an i5 4690k and Asus Maximus VII Hero.

I will not be upgrading my 770 to the 970/980, and will most likely wait for 20/16nm. My games still run great with the 770. I advise you do the same OP.

Edit: Ubisoft is completely wrong. 'Cinematic' means 24fps, not 30. Those cheap bas*ards.

Thank you to whoever unmarked me as best answer?
I cant wait for a mod to stop the troller :)

You mean, the guy who started this thread and whose questions you in no way answered?

That guy?

The new 95w *E* versions of the FX- chips were 'baked' over the Summer, and tend to over-clock quite well. One of 'Es' should be a nice upgrade in performance over your FX-8120, especially when OC'd.

You could almost snag an FX-8320E and a PS/4 --- especially if you had someone to sell your -8120.

Bottom line is if you are happy with your performance, spending a bundle of cash on your current rig (or, a new rig) is likely not to be recommended --- with 20nm GPUs and mainstream DDR4 mobos hitting the market within a year ...

Gear down big rig. Lets not take the internet too seriously
