I am looking to buy a GTX 970 card (in India) but I'm not sure which model to go for.
which variant would be the best and safest option (given the cases of coil whine in some cards).
This will be my first gaming rig ,so i just want to get the right card.

thanks:)

Solution
Get a card from one of the big companies. Asus STRIX has a metal backplate and great cooling, efficiency and quietness. MSI has great heatpipe design too and is very quiet. Had mine for two weeks now and no problems whatsoever(some reported coil whine etc). Gigabyte is good but might prove noisy and Zotac is in my opinion a risky investment. Yes it offers 5 years guarantee but in case something happens you'll have to mail it back, get in contact with the company etc etc. The difference in price is minimal so I would reccomend go with a major brand. Avoid EVGA ACX 1.0 models, they had a heatpipe misalignment issue(only two of the three heatpipes make contact with the chipset and PCB), so you might run into cooling/heat trouble.

MSI is great if you can buy it locally. If you want to wait for the STRIX go for it. Personally I got the MSI one day before the release of the STRIX in the UK because I was left without a GPU(sold my old one).
