Crossfire vs SLI requirements

Solution
Nvidia doesn't support SLI if it involves a PCIe x4 slot, while AMD's Crossfire does.

H97 isn't capable of splitting CPU PCIe lanes across slots, so you'll always have a x16 slot (and usually a x4 from the chipset). Z97 can split the lanes across two slots, x8 + x8.

Hence, SLI is only possible with Z97.
