New build with MSI GTX 970 - 'No Signal' on monitor when GPU is plugged in.

I've recently started a build using the MSI GTX 970 and when it is plugged into the motherboard and computer starts up the screen says there is no signal. Starts up fine when using integrated graphics but nothing at all when plugged in.
Computer does not turn off itself when GPU is plugged in, as I know it does with some similar problems.
Please bear with me and ask for any info you might need and I'll let you know!

Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming 5
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing
PSU: Corsair 550W ATX12V / EPS12V
RAM: Kingston Fury Black Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB 2.5" SSD
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM (this is not showing up, aside form the graphics card problem.)
Case: Cooler Master Storm Enforcer ATX Mid Tower
Optical Drive: LG UH12NS30 Blu-Ray Reader, DVD/CD Writer
Extra Fan: Noctua NF-A14 PWM 82.5 CFM 140mm

I don't think it is a compatibility issue as I checked compatibility on PcPartPicker before purchasing, but again, I'm not sure.

Really worried/confused, really hope someone can help me out! :)
Thanks, Emily.

Check if you insterted the hdmi cable well enough (or whichever cable you're using).
If that's not the issue, then check if you connected the power connectors (8-pin and 6-pin) from the PSU and if the card is pushed well enough into the PCI-E slot.

HDMI cable is definitely in properly as there is a display when GPU is not installed.
Also both 6 and 8 pin connectors are in place, and checked card is definitely fully in, no change :(

This could be something as simple as a bad HDMI cable.

I'm not sure if your setup has onboard video... but if it does try booting with that first. If you can boot w/o the GPU, then you know all the other components are working normally (cpu, memory, motherboard).

If you can boot fine without it, then start troubleshooting the GPU.

To cowboydude99, as mentioned in original post, it does have onboard graphics and starts up all fine when connected that way without the GPU.
I'm very certain that it's the GPU that's the problem, what do you mean by troubleshooting?
To FunSurfer, yes I have tried the DVI connection also, same problem :(

Someone wrote this in another thread:

Look in your BIOS under display or graphic display and make sure PEG or PEG/IGP is selected. If IGP is selected, then your graphics are going to route through your CPU's integrated graphics processor by default.

Worth a try.

When you look at the PCI-E port the GPU is plugged into, do you see any pins? You shouldn't be able to see them.

Also, do you have another computer you can use to test? Let the PC boot with the GPU plugged in... using another PC run a ping test to the one having a problem. Do you ever get a reply, or are they just 'request timed out'?

This is one way to see if your PC is booting, but you can't see anything on screen.

Hey guys, sorry for the late reply, I've been at Uni all day. I decided to try and get a new DVI cable as my one is a little old/I figured I'd just try it out. Anyway I plugged it in and everything booted up on screen with the GPU in, managed to download the drivers etc. and now it works plugged into the HDMI.
Thanks so much for all the help! :)
Emily.

Sorry to bring this one back up, but I was having a read through and I had the same issue, can't even get BIOS on screen. The onboard graphics aren't even working and I've exhausted all my options.

Tried new GFX in another setup = Works.
Tried another GFX in new setup = Doesn't work.
Tried 2nd PCI-E on new setup = Doesn't work
Tried a different card in new setup = Doesn't work.

Specs are:
i7 6700
ASUS H170M-PLUS
GX750W PSU
GIGABYTE GTX 970 GFX
Coolermaster Hyper 212X CPU Cooler.
