Is AMD Dual Core Optimizer Actually Necessary In Windows 7?

As teh title describes Is this driver necessary in Win 7? Here is what AMD has to say on the subject:

The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer can help improve some PC gaming video performance by compensating for those applications that bypass the Windows API for timing by directly using the RDTSC (Read Time Stamp Counter) instruction. Applications that rely on RDTSC do not benefit from the logic in the operating system to properly account for the affect of power management mechanisms on the rate at which a processor core's Time Stamp Counter (TSC) is incremented. The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer helps to correct the resulting video performance effects or other incorrect timing effects that these applications may experience on dual-core processor systems, by periodically adjusting the core time-stamp-counters, so that they are synchronized.
This driver is for Windows XP only.

Well Since this is suposed to be just for Win XP, why is it bundled with in with the Vista/7/8/8.1 drivers? Do these operating systems still need this Driver to circumvent the RDTSC or has this issue been resolved?

did some more looking around and it seems most all been buried but the stuff for ver 1.14 found this at Microsoft but I guess its now just one of those things that you got from amd weather you want it or not ..

from Microsoft ....

there are a few games out there that where coded a bit ruff on there usage of multi threaded CPU,s. There dual core optimizer updated for vista was to allow it to be run in vista when used with these games. The optimizer was and is less optimization then timing fix. Vista SP2 was said to include the optimization timing fix for dial triple and quad cores that was placed into win 7.

Therefor = No longer needed.

vista SP1 = needed & not needed (some optimization pre included)

Vista SP2 = not...

well don't know back awile there was a deal where there was a intel cripple amd issue with windows and a lawsuit followed and all that was to be fixed so in the mean time amd came out with that to patch that issue

so I would think that is a old patch for older chips its kinda dated now ??

There is a different version of the driver for XP though, meaning Video driver. This thing is in the start up menu and starts every time I start my system. I am trying to figure out if it is really necessary for Win 7 or not. If not I will flush it down the software toilet and not look back.

That was a good read BTW. I'm not to sure if this driver helps that ( Intel's Defective Compiler ) or it is actually a type of patch to upgrade the XP OS to be more compatible with Multi-core CPU's. I know very little of programming and trying to figure it out on my own for now. Since I know so little about it Google is not being my friend right now. :( lol

amd removed a lot for that cause I went to look something up that I remembered from my althon 2 and vista and all the support for that has been removed it was not just foe xp but it seems that's all amd now has on it .. the one thin though is that xp did not support multi core well or at all ..


this deal with amd dropping stuff and support from there site is why I now left them I built nothing but amd for just over 14 years and now I just went intel

so you brought this up and I knew there was amd stuff on it but this is all I now get from them

so here I still got running amd chips that I go to amd for any support on them and get that?? well thanks amd for leaving me to hold the bag on your stuff ..

ps ,, amd bundles these things in there vid card drivers like me running intel there amd chipset drivers and all that has nothing to do with intel comes right along with the cards driver package weather I want it or not just the way it is unified driver package one driver fits all

anyway vista was patched and should be no issues with windows above that

A sweet find. I have been giving it some real long and hard thought and I remember seeing this being installed with some programs and not with the Video Drivers. Now I know the optimization is already built into all the OS's I own, I will proceed with the forced eviction notice and flush the turd down the toilet. ;)
