Just got a RT-AC87U router and im trying to make my old router/modem in to modem only (N600 DGND3700). Unfortunately im having alot of trouble mainly because i have no idea what im doing lol i have no option under advanced in gui to switch it to modem only. I have VDSL and the RT-AC87U does not have a dsl port only a Ethernet port and my old router/modem has a dsl port and Ethernet port. Hopefully you understand what im going on about any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Yes, the ASUS must be connected to an LAN port of the N600. But if you leave the ASUS router settings on you will not get an Internet connection unless you either set it up as an AP with the cable going to an LAN port on the ASUS as I suggest and then turning off the DHCP on the ASUS and giving the ASUS a network address that is not in the DHCP server range of the N600 --- OR --- connect the ASUS using the ASUS WAN port and set the ASUS WAN address and DNS address as the gateway address of the N600, which I would not do as you have no need to create a subnet since the N600 is very capable of acting as the router alone.

I'm sure that this all sounds a little confusing, but once you choose a way to go, changing the settings is not...

While their are several options, I would just attach the ASUS to an LAN port of the old unit and configure the ASUS as an access point. You can either turn off the wireless radio on the old unit or leave it on and use different channels and SSIDs on the ASUS.

what i have got at the moment is dsl going from line into N600 DGND3700 and RT-AC87U connected to it using Ethernet. So the only way to do it is connected the RT-AC87U from Ethernet port to N600 DGND3700 lan?

Just to clarify this is the setup for using ASUS as router and N600 as modem?

No, in both cases you are using the N600 as a modem and router. AFAIK you cannot turn off the router part of the N600 without creating issues for the modem working correctly.

My recommendation is to keep using the N600 as the modem/router and configure the ASUS as a wireless access point (you can also use the three unused LAN ports on the ASUS and on the N600 to connect things if you need).
