Slow / Freezing HDD

Hello, I have two Western Digital HDD's in my computer. The first one is 150GB which I used for the windows installation. The second is a 500GB which I used to store all of my files, run programs/games from, etc. It was all fine and dandy before. But the last time I formatted my windows install drive (which I do every once in awhile to speed up my machine again), the 500 gig is extremely wonky.

It now freezes up every few minutes when browsing or running a program off of it, and can stay that way anywhere from a minute to a few. After its done with its freeze it will run great again for another few minutes, and do it all over again.

Things I have tried...
Switch the SATA port
Switch the SATA cable
Used a different power plug for the HDD from the power supply (not exactly sure the name of them)
Checking for bad sectors
Checkdisk
Formatting the problem drive.

I am suspecting that the drive has just gone bad, but am hoping there is another fixable reason for this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

run a diagnostics on your drive... WD data lifegaurd here http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=612&sid=3 it may be failing.

When you reinstalled windows be sure you only have the drive your putting windows hooked up. Don't attach the data drive until your done installing and updating.

What Malware and Anti-V programs are you using perhaps you have a malware of virus on your machine? For Malware you could try malwarebytes and Spybot Search & Destroy. For Anti-V you can use AVG, AVAST, Node32... there are many options.

As for the anti-virus/malaware. I have Malwarebyte already, amd I installed Avast after you suggested so. Nothing found for either.

Hi there DevoncSmith,

It is strange that even after writing zeros the problem persists. Did you use the Full Erase option? If not, you can try that out.
Updating the BIOS is a good idea. Another good thing to do is just to attach the drive to another computer. This way you will see whether the drive is causing the issues or your system.

You can also run CC Cleaner and clean your temp internet files if you are worried about loosing your internet passwords leave the browser you use open even after it tells you to close it. With it you can also check your registry for errors and have it correct them.

DLG does not report the actual number of bad sectors. A tool such as CrystalDiskInfo is better in this regard. Look for reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors.

Actually, the Quick Test of DLG tool provides S.M.A.R.T. disk information which includes: Current Pending Sector Count, Re-allocated Sector Count, etc.

@D_Know_WD, you need to understand the difference between "normalised" and "raw" attribute values. DLG reports the former but not the latter. The latter are far more important.

Can you tell us how many sectors the drive has reallocated, how many sectors are currently pending reallocation, and how many relocation events the drive has recorded?

BTW, if the normalised value of the reallocated sector count had been 141 instead of 92, then DLG would have given the drive a passing grade even though failure would have been imminent.

If you're looking for information on SMART attributes, don't bother with WD's documentation. It doesn't really explain anything.

Tech Support then responded with a statement purportly from Engineering, but which was actually plagiarised from a document that I had written and posted on my web space. Worse still, my article discussed Seagate's proprietary SMART attributes and bore no relevance to WD's own.

Alright sorry for the super long delay, busy life got a hold of me for awhile. So DLG tool did not report anything wrong or fix anything with any of its options, Crystal Disk Info says the drive is in good shape, BIOS update didn't help. And virus/malware scans don't lead to anything.

Any other possible solutions to this random drive issue?

Once again sorry it took me forever to respond, I will try to get back sooner in the future.

First off I read about the oxidisation. There was some on the HDD but cleaning it didn't seem to make a difference.

As far as the specs go...
500 watt power supply
150GB HDD
500GB HDD <-(Problem drive)
Asus M5A97 MOBO
8.00GB DDR3 Ram
AMD FX-6300 Six-Core Processor
All of this running on Windows 7 64-bit

fzabkar, you are saying that according to the data, my HDD may still be sick then? If so then is there a "cure" for the problem that you are aware of by any chance?

Back up all the data on that hard drive its days are numbered. After you can try reformatting it and it may perform better but its days may be numbered.
