Hey all I'm helping my friend upgrade their computer. Firstly, I don't know much about compatibility and so helping them with he upgrading can be tough.

- Here's a link to their computer: Link to computer

They want to upgrade to an actual graphics card, I suggested that they also upgrade their power supply at the same time, here's what I suggested, please tell me any errors I may have missed.

Power Supply: Link to PS

Graphics Card: Link to Card

Solution

You should be Fine. You are wise to upgrade the psu. The ones that HP uses are not that great. Lower Quality.

Tell him to spend the extra $40 and get a graphics card that's three tiers up:

That power supply is fine; Cooler Master V Series has a good reputation but their other stuff is all over the place.

Eventually he may consider dropping in a quad-core CPU ... that i3 is OK, but at the low end of what I'd call "performance" gaming processors.

By the way, what is he doing the upgrade for? If it's gaming (the majority of the questions on here), then the above makes sense. If it's for playing movies, videos, etc. as an HTPC, then I'd give different advice.

It is for gaming capt_taco, and as far as the measurements go, both of the components fit in the computer. Would there be any comparability issues. i.e. would that graphics card work with the motherboard they have? I checked the hp link and it said there was a three pci express, so im assuming the answer is yes.

Agree on the graphics card upgrade.

Also, from a hardware side of things, everything you need to know is right here!
