I have built a custom mITX PC build with a Prodigy m case (I don't like the case), a modular PSU, and a used Radeon R2 290X (which I now regret).

Other info: 8 GB RAM, 550W PSU, Intel Core i7 4790 (not OC), ASUS Z-791-PLUS mobo, 128 SDD (Samsung), 1TB HDD, 750 GB External, Cool master CPU water cooling (can't remember the name specifically).

So, it worked fine for a week. It played games like Portal 2, and C&C (all of which was made for older hardware). I can't complain.

Then today, I made the error of using Windows Movie Maker. Apon opening it, I immediately heard my GPU fans (reference model) spin up to %60 speed (I checked). The odd part was I wasnt loading or rendering any intense video, or eye candy. I literally opened the app and the GPU began to heat up - really, really fast.

While at 1% CPU utilization, my GPU was was burning a crimson 94 degrees Celcius. My CPU was at 30 C, and everything else was pretty cool.

So, I went into SpeedFan and ramped-up the fan speed to try and force the hot air out. It had plenty of ventilation (considering its a Prodigy M - somewhat of a miracle), and nothing blocking the outwards heating.

The irony of all of this, is that just before this all happened - I finished researching on alternative cooling for my card.

The thing was at 104 C - And my whole machine went down. I took out the GPU (burning myself in the process), and I estimate that the thing has only lost half of its heat around 15 minutes later - outside in open air.

My question - What the hell happened - and how do I fix it? It looks like the card still works (well, it obviously doesn't - but it can still be used on the PC).

Please help me! Was it really Windows Movie Maker that nearly destroyed my whole system)?

For reference: 100° C is the scientific boiling point of water. 40°C is like a really hot summer day.

EDIT: So it seemed to WMM the entire time. Normal idle temps were around 50° C, and firing up GPU heavy apps caused it go up to around 5% each.

If I opened WMM, the GPU temps would skyrocket towards 100° C. So I did replace the termal paste, which in turn knocked down the temp by 10° C.

Now the top temp is 95° C (like it should be based on catalyst/AMD speck. Also, I researched the minimum wattage for the GPU, and though it recommends a 750W PSU, tests have shown that this GPU only needs 150W of power (which would be fine, because by I'm not planing on going OC on this board unless I install Water Cooling (without a pump), maybe just a closed looped one).

If I underclocked the GPUDDR5, WMM would give me an BSOD (because I guess it was using a cached value for the max frequency for the RAM). I also slightly reduced the power rating of the card (I think 20%), and now the card remains reativley cool.

I will select the best answer tonight. I never had an warranty, so RMA isn't really a viable option. I also dont want to blow loads of cash on a GTX Titan or 780Ti when this card "CAN" preform just as well on most games.

I'm tempted to get a new case, but finding a good mitx case is hard (too small or too big). The Cosair Oblivion mITX looks nice, though I heard its crammed like mine. Even the Cool master ones would function better!

I don't I think the Prodigy is worth what I paid for it. I really want to like it, but I keep losing hope. I actually I thought I ordered the original cade, but was shocked when the M edition mITX case arrived in the mail. It would have taken too long to send back, so I kept it. I might make my own case someday, since all of the ones I've seem to have too many cons over pros.

I assume that you dnot change the thermal paste? It's worth a try. A friend had a second hand Gtx 560 and got close to 100*C temps, with a change of paste, he fell down to 60-70*C

Was this a single occurance and it hasn't happened since? Could be some kind of driver bug with movie maker that forced the card to go crazy. I'd contact AMD directly since this card is under warranty and they can pull some logs to see what it was doing. I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens again.

I'd also check the drivers and such.

very wierd, the r9 290x should throttle at 85C and never get hotter than that.
I think you may have a bad card -may want to rma
the other thing is that PSU is kind of underpowered for your setup -you want atleast 750w

Replacing the thermal paste has done the trick (I think). I'm doing some basic video editing in WMM, so I will report back if anything flimsly happens.

The idle temp is at around 45° C now. A lot safer than the orginial (which was around 60°C-80°C).

I doubt this has much to do with it but how do you have your fans set up? do they all blow air out of the case or do all blow in?

It seemed to be Windows Movie Maker that was the culprit. I also found out that my 550W PSU is just enough to make everything work at full power (500W at full) - I'm probably going to get a power comsumption guage to check). So, I installed lightworks (free), and it basically keeps the 290X at 50° C. Its a pretty nice video editor.

To be safe, I have reduced the 290X power intake by %20 because I don't want to accidentally overload my PSU again :/

I'm considering switching to the Silverstone Raven RVZ01 Case (with an 600W mini PSU). I like how it uses positive cooling to vent thenheat outnof the sides, and that I could fit everything I have inside of it except my ATX PSU. That would be another $200 slam on my bank card through...

I am mad using a reference cooled R9 290X in my ITX. That's just who I am though! XD

I'm not a fan of the Prodigy M's poor cooling. Even with an closed loop water cooled CPU, all of the hot air in the case is forced out the bottom. That's bit right.

I'm honestly tempted to just flip the case upside down., and force the hot air out the top (like it should). I removed the bottom feet because they were broken from shipping, and because I don't like my computer rocking back and forth when a cable is tugged (or something). It is dangerous because of my vertical HDD setup (which is ultimately why I don't like the case).

I'm going to select the best answer, then start a new thread about modding the crap out of my Prodigy M, or getting the thinner Silverstone case instead.

Thanks for your help! I can't believe Microsoft would try to use 100% of my GPU in Movie Maker!

It seemed like the GPU RAM was being overwhelemed. If I underclocked the GPU Memory Clock (temporarily - I would get the damn BSoD!!!)
