I have a USB Drive that someone gave me with pictures on it that I need to open. My computer says I need to format the USB but that all data will be erased. When I tried "chkdisk" by searching CMD as noted in another post, it informed me of the RAW data type and that Checkdisk doesn't work for this....any other advice on where to go from here?

Hi

What format was used on the usb drive?
(Fat32, NTFS, MAC or one of linux EXT2..)

what operating system is on your PC ?
I assume some sort of Windows.

At first not clear if pictures taken using a RAW picture format or the USB drive can not be read

usual cause of needing re format is pulling drive out before writing has finished

have you tried chkdsk yet and had an error?
(chkdsk works for FAT and NTFS and can make apparently unreadable disks readable providing no physical damage has occured)

Quick format in Windows PC does not destroy data but is only used as last resort before using unformat options in data recovery software

Quickest and safest option to get person who gave you the pictures to give you another copy

the format is Fat32. Yes, I have a windows operating system.
I tried Chkdsk and it said it wouldn't work...

So if I tell it to Quick format it will not erase the pictures from the disk?

Thanks for all your help!!

Hi

Quick format does not over write the data but you need to be skilled in data recovery
Best to run western digital data lifeguard for windows to check for physical damage before proceeding further

Consider recovery software copy off data to another location do not try to recover data to corrupt usb drive
