so, to start off, im looking to have a "mobile" windows 7 hdd. i have a laptop, it has an ssd in it. i use the laptop for mobile use(linux) and i am finally able to purchase windows 7. now what i would like to be able to do is,

install windows 7 on that ssd. but be able to take that hdd out of that laptop and put it in my desktop and still be able to boot with it.

i was thinking, will this work?

i say that because i came across a few scrapped(in the garbage) computers and tried to put the hdds in my computer and they wouldnt boot from it.(something about a driver issue)

i think they had xp tho. will windows 7 work like this? im trying to do this because i am getting into programming and need the ability to swap the hdd back and forth to keep a clean copy of windows to program in.(the one im using to type this(desktop) is cluttered with many games and software i use for other purposes)

-it would be great to be resured that this will work or not-

It will flag you if the hardware doesn't match, thus causing your product key serious issues. Does the product key allow for multiple installs? I doubt it. Windows 7 activation is required to validate the install according to MS lease terms. Blue screens are on your horizon my child (Chipsets for laptops don't match chipsets for desktops)
Depends what hardware is on the laptop and desktop. If it doesnt like something it'll probably crash the system

And it'll probably install drivers for whatever, when you put it on the desktop, and you'll have 2 lots of drivers.

So I wouldn't guarantee that it'll work.

And obviously it may say you'll have to activate it again on the desktop. If you've already activated it on the laptop

If both systems were Identical it would possible work. But you can run into a plethora of little problems. It is not
recommended by any one I no of. Including myself. Sorry. the main problem you would have is triggering Microsoft
Windows revalidation each time you swaped. With the systemic difference that is between laptops an desktops you would
be lucky if it reboots.

Can't do that. Even with identical hardware the PNP signatures are different, thus triggering reactivation every time the drive is swapped. No way around (legally that is) purchasing a separate license for each machine.

And just a reminder that any discussion of the non legal methods is prohibited here.

Thank you for that reminder.
