I am new to gaming and wanted to know how you would rate this system for a beginner. I bought these with the idea of upgrading the CPU and adding/changing the Video Card within 1-2 years.

Memory: PNY XLR8 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory = $60
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Video Card = $124
Case: Thermaltake Versa II ATX Mid Tower Case = $34
PSU: XFX 550W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply = $34
CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor = $90
MB: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard = $79
Storage:240GB Kingston V300 = $79
Storage2: 4TB Seagate Desktop HDD = $89
Optical Drive: Asus Blu Ray Writer = $45
Fans: Kingwin 120mm (3) = $10
Total = $704

I opted for 8GB instead of 16GB upon recommendation. I also added 3 fans for my case I found online for cheap. Next round... cooling and overclocking.

I added a 4TB Seagate Desktop HDD I found online for $89 after a discount, a special promotion, and a mail-in-rebate. I will be stress-testing before I start using to see if it holds.

I actually saved quite a bit compared to buying everything at once (based on the following build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/6wkfD3)

Please let me know if what you think. I am open to any recommendations.

Everything is good there. Really a DVD player is not NECESSARY, but you might probably have to use a DVD every once in a while! Also I wouldn't get 16gb of RAM for gaming as no game ever uses more than 6 GB on MAX settings. Well, the prices of SSD's are decreasing rapidly so it really is up to you. I wouldn't go for a 500GB now personally, especially in that sort of budget.

Admirable
If you are planning to have a SLI (GTX 970) configuration in the future, I will recommend to invest more money in the PSU (750~850W) good quality PSU.

I will also opt for intel build if you would like to upgrade in the future.

However your build is nice and as what Mr. Caarond said about the RAM is correct. :)

I like this build. I would look into overclocking the fx-6300. You have a good mobo to do so. Invest in a decent air cooler and you'll reach 4.4-4.5GHz.

If you don't need a DVD drive now then you probably won't later. I would only recommend it if you have a collection of DVDs you want to watch on your monitor, otherwise skip the DVD drive.

As for SSD. 256GB should be more than enough for almost anyone. With games and programs I can't imagine it getting full. Anyways you can put games on HDD and do the same as if on the SSD. Did you buy the SSD already?

Thank you for your recommendation about the PSU. I am going to upgrade the PSU to a modular 750W when I see a good deal on the web.

Thank you for the recommendation. I think I will downgrade to 8 GB ram and save the money for a better graphics card down the road.

Thank you for your recommendation. I chose a better MB over a better CPU (for my budget) so I can upgrade the CPU after a while without upgrading the MB. I will attempt to overclock it when I buy a liquid cooling system and a better PSU. As for the SSD, I went with a 240GB Kingston V300 just because I found one for $79 online.

^ air cooling will do nicely, really. Fans such as the Hyper 212 evo and Noctuas are great. Also be careful about the Kingston SSD's. The reviews for that are pretty mixed :p You might want to check it out online first before you consider buying it.

Thank you for the recommendations. Unfortunately, I already bought the Kingston SSD. I will likely be upgrading within 1 year, so I am not too worried about the reviews. I can always use it as a secondary or backup drive. I will look into air cooling once I am ready to overclock my CPU.
