What causes a pc to over heat and shut off.

Was wondering what would cause a pc to overheat and shut off while i play games(l.o.l) and how do you fix it.
This is my build:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
CPU
AMD FX-4100 Zambezi 32nm Technology
RAM
4.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 669MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
ASUSTeK Computer INC. M5A78L-M LX PLUS (AM3R2)
Graphics
S23B550 (1920x1080@60Hz)
1024MB ATI AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series (XFX Pine Group)

Heatsink not correclty mounted, bad thermal paste aplication, dust (lots of dust), cpu fan not spinning, a bad cpu. A hot GPU will also shut your system, download msi Afterburner to see what are your temps, Both of them should be below/around 70°C, anything higher than this and you alt+f4 out of the app inmedialty.
