Fried something... CPU?

Last night I was gaming, and my fan started clattering. Minimized my game and saw that my cpu temp was 101. Immediately shut down, but I didn't have time to investigate.

Just got home from work and tried to turn on my pc. It got to the windows loading screen and started to load, then shut off. I tried again, and it let me run through start up repair, rebooted, started to load windows again, and shut off. Third attempt shut off during start up repair.

I obviously fried something here, but I'm not sure that it's the cpu... help?

I'm running an AMD Phenom II X4 on a msi 870-g45 mobo with 8 gigs of g skill ripjaws.

Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to rip into the case until Friday because I work horrible hours and I don't want to wake up everyone in the house.

It won't even stay on long enough to let me get anywhere in bios.

Guess I'm just looking for a heads up as to if it could be anything other than the cpu. I want to be prepared for what I'm dealing with.

I had no idea the temp would get that high immediately after start up. I'll open 'er up on Friday and check the fans and what not and see if I can make some progress. Hopefully I can fix this on the cheap side after all. I was planning on doing a new build in December or January. I don't have the extra cash for it now. The thought of dumping money into this thing to get me through 2 to 3 months makes me want to cry.

Anywho, thanks for your help so far. I'm sure I'll be back on Friday.

Don't jump the gun. :)

Temps could be high simply because the cooler has become loosened. So perfectly possible at start up.

Hold up hold up. Shoddy? Man i just bought an msi z97 gaming 5, 2 months ago. Am i in the danger zone too?

Not at all. Completely different motherboard although they share a similar name.
The Z97 versions are good.

Oh okay. Thanks for the swift answer. To the op: I too, almost fried my cpu last night. I forgot to plug in the cpu fan after changing my psu. I even did seriously heavy gpu benchmarks with the cpu fan unplugged... Thankfully assetto corsa warned me with its constant "cpu occupancy >%95" warning. All four cores were 80c. Best of luck to you.

Okay, got my case opened and my fans are good. Managed to boot into windows, and loaded at 86 degrees and steadily increased. I have a Corsair liquid cooler, and I looked up some reviews. People are saying the pump dies 2 to 3 years in. So, guessing that's my problem. Going hunting for a heatsink next. Hopefully that'll get me back on my feet.
