Hello,

I'm in need of a NAS for home usage. It will serve the following purposes:
- Storage and Backup
- Media Server (Streaming HD movies)

I have three computers at home, two of which are rather slow (one of them is a laptop). The third is my own, which is built for performance. I'd like to store all files and media on the NAS and be able to stream the media from any (future) home computer.

From what I understood it is possible for a NAS to transcode the media and stream it to the client. Both the laptop and the slow PC aren't able to process HD movies on their own. Will this NAS solution solve this?

What I need to know is which components to buy:
- Motherboard
- CPU
- Memory
- Dedicated Video Card?
- Software
- Hard Drives (2x 2TB) (RAID setup).
- PSU
- Casing

For hard disks, 2 TB will suffice, but room for expansion in the future.

Budget: 500-750 Euro.

Solution
Take the 500-700 Euro and buy a good Synology unit. Trust me, it's better than anything you will homebrew. I have both here, and I love my Synology. It does so many things a home made NAS can't.
