Good day guys! I have this problem with my new External HDD (Toshiba Convio Simple 1TB USB 3.0) that when im copying a certain movie and playing it with my USB Media Player (Asus O!Play Mini) connected via HDMI to our TV there is a point that when i am watching the movie it will freeze at a certain time. (example like in 3 mins while watching the movie it will freeze and close the movie returning to menu)

It always happens whenever i copy a movie onto my external and the solution is i recopy it to work but also have a chance that it will fail again

So do you guys think the problem here is the External? Or the Player?
Is hard resetting the player will solve this problem?

Solution
I wasn't saying it was power I was saying it could be power or rate of information. If pauses at same time it could be the buffer isn't keeping up.

Did you get this online or from a brick and mortar store. You could try another manufacture and see if that fixes it

Copy a movie to the external drive and then play the movie file on your PC. If it plays, points to an issue or conflict with the mini player.

Hello, thank you for the reply, I just copied a file recently and also played it on the player, after 3 mins it stopped.. And then i went to the PC again and delete the movie and recopy it. After 1 hour of playing, it stopped again.

And also previously, i also had a movie which failed to play smoothly on first copy, then after 2nd copy, it ran smoothly and i was able to finish the movie.

this might be a shot and probably wrong (im almost pasing out) but are the movies that fail shortly hd/blueray quality (and size) uncompressed? It may be making the portable harddrive work harder than need and also (just thought of this) when it fails is it connected to a usb 2.0 port, if memory is right the power output of 2.0 vs 3.0 is different and the draw from the drive could be to high for 2.0 to compensate, not to mention the speed of 2.0 is much slower than 3.0. Your pc/laptop may have 3.0 and be fine but the device you are trying to run it through may not be

The player has 2.0 usb port, the external is usb 3.0 but it is backward compatible with usb 2.0

Yes, usb 3.0 is backwards compatible with 2.0 but what I mean is the device may not be powering the usb to work at full capacity for power and/or speed.

Example (not exact) you may get 100mbps with 3.0 but with 2.0 you may get 10...still works but not as fast or steady if the draw/demand is high enough.

wait, you have a toshiba.

I bought one a while back (2TB i think) I ended up returning it because it would randomly disonnect from my pc while moving large files. I went to segate and western digital (one is desktop and other mobile) and no issues since

So the problem here is the compatibility? I get these freezes because of the lack of power?
Once the movie freezes in the player, when i read it again on my PC, the movie also freezes on that particular time.

getting back to the tosiba thing....if can try another manufacturer (ie segate or wd) I would try that because you issue is sounding more and more like one I had. Never got to the point of trying to watch a movie but with large files similar issue. Now with the segate and wd (again one desktop version with seperate power and one mobile usb powered I do watch movies with those and on laptop and through my blueray player usb and netiher have issues or dropped off once yet

i just checked and my portable is wd if that helps and I have at times just hooked it to my blueray player and set it on top and used the player to access the movies on it and never a issue....

may that be the only problem you have and hopefully fix for you
