Can I install my Windows 8.1 (running on a HDD now) on a recently bought SSD?

When I built my new gaming PC, I just grabbed the HDD of my old computer, formatted it, then installed a new Windows on it (using the new PC). But I decided to buy a 256GB SSD, and replace the hdd. (I will use the HDD in the background for multimedia, if neccessary, but that doesn't matter now) So my question is: Can I install an OS (Win8.1) for the second time, on a different drive? Because I read something which said someting like "You have to sell the OS together with the HDD, with the Win8.1 sticker on it. It cannot be sold separately. (the OS and the HDD)" So I'm not sure if I can use the Win for the second time. Thanks for your help!!!

Hey there, dtamas9!

Yes, you can install your OS for the second time on your system. This is the best thing to do when getting a new SSD - performing a fresh install. As long as you have the Windows installation disk you should be good to go. The product key should still be good, since you haven't changed the motherboard. Your operating system is communicating with the motherboard and not the HDD/SSD.
So as long as you are installing it on the same computer/mobo, you shouldn't encounter any issues with it.
Just make sure you have your HDD disconnected first. Otherwise, Windows will place a hidden recovery partition on it and mess with the OS installation. Later, you can reattach the HDD and do whatever you want with it. Your files...

You can install but you need to format first the HDD. Or you can do a Disk Migration. I think your New SSD has a manual on how to migrate to a SSD without reinstalling windows.

Hope this helps. :)

before you do anything, make sure you have the product key in hand.

Once you have that product key in hand. Unplug your HDD and install windows on your SSD.
(Make sure your sata port attached to your ssd is set to ACHI)

If you have a hard time activating windows on your SSD, just do the phone activation and you should be fine.

Plug back in your HDD.
