I am buying a new graphics card and would like to know the better choice.
A XFX 290x for $300
or a 970 for $350-$360 (the Zotac Omega)

Right now I know the 290x is faster but has much hight temps and energy intake. I have also heard it has less overclockability.

so those are really the defining factors. It is a tough choice really. if you are going tto go up in resoilution like 1440p or higher I might go with the r9 290x. I really cannot help to much more than to say that nvidia does have physx which is cool for the handful of games that use it.

which games do you prefer.

your power supply is plenty for either card.

so i just went from CF 7950's to a gtx 970.

I loved both the AMD cards and this GTX is great also. I think my CF setup was a little faster but I wanted the 4GDDR.

if you go for a r9 290x i like this one and there is a great review on hard forums

The cards are comparable in performance.
It takes a synthetic benchmark to tell the difference.

R9 cards have had some quality issues.

I have a method to pick between equally performing products.
Go to newegg and find the candidates.
Filter on the most reviews by verified buyers.
Then look at what percent of the reviews have one or two eggs indicating some sort of a problem.
In particular, look at the reasons for a bad review. Some are not very valid, so exclude those.

Of concern is initial failure rates:

I vote for the GTX970. Don't know about the zotac omega.
I would not bother chasing exotic coolers which a GTX970 does not need.
I would pay a bit more for a better binned factory warranted superclock version and not bother overclocking at all.
Check the boost speeds to compare.

temps will be about the same as the cooling solution are very good for the AMD card now. the power supply difference is the GTX will want a 500 watt power supply while a 600 watt would be needed for the AMD.

both will power whatever it is you need right on up to 1440-1600p monitor.

are there free bundled games available to you

and what power supply are you using

what type of monitor are you using

Power supply-EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

Monitor-Monitor-BenQ RL2455HM 24.0" (I will upgrade to a 144hz monitor and/or multiple monitors somewhat soon)

For the 290x i will get star citizen and 3 more games of my choice (they have a list it is the ruby reward) for the 970 i might be able to get borderlands the presequal.

With the 970 you get DirectX 12 compatibility and exclusive graphics settings: Adaptive VSync, TXAA, FXAA, DSR, MFAA, HBAO+, and of course PhysX. So you'll have more options for better image quality on the 970. You'll also get Nvidia driver support, which for many would end the debate in itself.
