I've been looking at getting one of these cards and am after some clarification on some of the specs.

Cooling

1.a Hybrid cooling would be nice which I understand MSI certainly has with the ability to allow the fan to remain ON at say 20% fan when the GPU has low usage by setting up a custom fan curve.

1.b I think I read somewhere that the Asus does not allow the fans to remain on and will always deactivate the fan when the temps are below a set level. Is this adjustable like the MSI with a custom fan curve or is there a fixed value like 50 degrees and the always switches off?

1.c As these cards are so efficient do I even need to worry about case cooling with any extra fans on the side/top/front?

1.d Any other recommended GTX 970's? EVGA/Gigabyte? (I dont think they have hybrid cooling)

HDMI 2.0

2.a MSI seems the most versatile for cooling but are all manufacturers confirmed as using HDMI 2.0? The specs listed on MSI website has varied over the weeks from if I recall correctly, initially listing 4K or HDMI 2.0 support on their main page, then removing this to show only HDMIx1.
And on their specs page only showing showing Max Resolution: 4096x2160 @24 Hz (UK) and Max Resolution: 4096x2160 @24 Hz (1.4a) & 3840x2160 @60 Hz (2.0) (US).
The fact they quote 4096x2160 @24 and both 1.4a and 2.0 separately seems to indicate that there are 2 versions with both standards as obviously HDMI 2.0 superceeds 1.4a so there would be no need to even mention it. EVGA & Asus both clearly mention HDMI 2.0 support but what about MSI?

2.b Does anyone know if any/all these cards use 4K@60 with full resolution 4:4:4 chroma information, or do they employ chroma subsampling.

Many Thanks

1a. Yes you can setup a custom fan profile to keep it on at 20% when in Windows/game.
1b. Yes there is a set temp that when it is under that temp the fans stops. You can create a custom fan profile for this.
1c. You shouldn't need extra fans, just decent air flow.
1d. I have the MSI. So far so good. EVGA and GB are also good.

2a. It is a 2.0 port. Confirmed with their support.
2b. I looked at the HDMI 2.0 standard, but didn't see anything for 4:4:4 chroma on HDMI. I did see it listed for display port 1.3.

By the time you're gaming at 4k@60 you'll probably be buying a new card anyway.

Everything else is correct, in terms of the fan speeds, use MSI Afterburner. You don't need an MSI card for it and its free. I use it for my Zotac and ASUS cards.

I personally would get the ASUS 970. You'll be very happy and futureproof with this card

I was thinking that at the price point the GTX 970's have been released, SLI could be a realistic option in the near future, especially since 4K TV's are now almost reasonably priced too.

The Asus does look the best to me in terms of appearance, which I assume is why it is at a slight premium. Also not heard that it has the fan sticker issue like the MSI or fans behaving erratically. Can you confirm if MSI Afterburner will allow the fan on the Asus 970 to always remain running at a low RPM even when idle? I thought I read the Asus will always shut down below a certain temp.

Thanks.

Thanks for the replies.

On point 1.b Does the custom fan profile on the Asus 970 only adjust the threshold at which the fan shuts off, or does it allow the fan to remain spinning at a user defined low RPM when idle?
On point 1.c I wouldn't say I have a particularly decent airflow as most would have when using prior GFX cards. My case is padded for silence and has minimum airflow. But with the efficient/low heat nature of the GTX 970 I was thinking even a case made for silence would be adequate. Any thoughts?
On point 1.d The MSI seems the most reasonably priced with decent room for overclocking, but I'm hesitating due to some reports on the net about coil whine, a sticker on one of the fans and erratic fans (one fan spinning at full RPM while the other stops). Have you had any issues such as these with the MSI?

Again, Thanks.
