Some Wifi Networks Work, Some Don't

I just purchased a new Inspiron 17 5000 from Dell running Windows 8.1 and it has a Dell Wireless 1704 802.11b/g/n (2.4 GHz) wireless adapter in it. I am using what the system claims to be the latest driver, 6.30.223.181. This works fine on my secured home wifi network, but at my school, I can detect the network but I get the message "Can't connect to this wifi network" whenever I try to connect. Most others are able to connect to the school wifi with their laptops (although few others are also not able), and I am able with my iPhone, so I know I am using the correct password.

I have not yet had the opportunity to try it on other networks, but what would cause compatibility with some wifi networks and not others and what can I do about it? I have access to the computer, but not to the settings of the school's wifi network, and I do not have information about the routers used.

I already played with the channel settings, AP Compatibility settings, restarted, took the battery out, switched wifi on and off, and even restored to factory settings and reinstalled Windows. EDIT: I also have tried uninstalling and reinstalling this current driver.

Thank you very much!

Probably relevant to mention this is a public high school, not a university.

We don't have an official IT staff, just the librarians. The advice was just to try the password repeatedly, which I did before coming to them. My friend was told her identical issue of not being able to connect to the wifi was due to her use of Internet Explorer, which made me a tad skeptical of their assistance.

I don't know what other authentication there might be, as the majority of people I know with laptops, and I on my iPhone, have gained access just with the wifi password and nothing else
