Depending on your budget an Intel i5 chip is the best for gaming. The best AMD chips for gaming are on AM3+ such as the fx6300 or the fx8320 (as long as you have a graphics card) but will need overclocking to perform well. The AM3+ socket is essentially dead though and there will be no more significant products released for it.

The recent Athlon x4 860k etc. are a good budget cpu if the Fx chips cost too much. They are on fm2+ but again you need a separate gpu as they don't have graphics built in

I think that since you are getting a graphics card, it is useless to purchase an APU (FM2). If you buy a FM2 APU, you would only be using the CPU part of the chip. The AM3+ on the other hand is just a CPU, which means more room to design better microarchitecture. The best FM2 APU you can purchase is the AMD A10-6800K which runs at 4.1 GHz and comes with integrated AMD Radeon HD 8670D graphics. If you are going to get a graphics card, that integrated graphics would be useless. The FM2 only has up to four cores. The AM3+ CPU's have start a four cores and go all the way up to eight cores. The best card you could buy in the AM3+ socket is the AMD FX-9590 which runs at 4.7GHz.

If I had to choose, I would go with the AMD FX-8370E AM3+ CPU. It runs at 4.3GHz. It costs more than than the FM2 APU's, but it has a whole whopping 8 core's and runs at a faster base clock than the best FM2 APU card. If I had to purchase a FM2 APU, I would go with the A10-6790K which i talked about earlier. The choice is up to you, but i recommend the AM3+
