I'm using a laptop, core2duo t6600 and nvidia 240m. It's 4 years old now and everything was running fine until one day it started switching off automatically.
I cleaned my thermal vents, formatted the hard drive, reinstalled windows, tried linux, nothing worked. It switches off randomly after 2-5 mins. Then under power settings i set the max cpu usage to 99% in balanced mode. High performance mode was set to defaults. And it worked. Whenever i used balanced power mode, my cpu got downscaled and it didn't switch off but since games ran slow, i minimized my games and switched to high performance and it still worked perfectly. Any idea what the problem is? I updated windows and now i keep getting the bsod. I can't reinstall windows cause it keeps switching off.

Solution
Possible? Yes ,but no way to test without a load rig and meter.
Two other possibilities are the memory need its contacts cleaned and reseated or the hard drive has bad sectors.
Can you make a boot disk and run a smart scan on the hard drive and run memtesr86 on the memory.
Two possibilities

One is the vents are dirty on the fan side. You will need to blow air in the out vents and then clean the lint and dust out of the fan.
Two is the thermal paste has dried out. Which means a partial dissemble and good cleaning of the processor and graphics. then clean the fan and heatsink assembly while you have it apart. Paste and reassemble.

I'm pretty sure the heating or the fan isn't the problem and yes i have cleaned it too. Even when i'm playing games all day and it gets really hot, it won't shut down. It never shuts down when i'm playing games.
