Is my 4790k defective? Insanely hot temperatures at stock speed + Noctua cooler

Hey guys,

I just got a new 4790k and am getting some really awful temperatures at *stock* speeds.
Using the latest Prime95 blend test, my temps will break 98C!!!
I've remounted the HSF and reapplied the thermal paste multiple times and have installed these countless times in the past without issue so it's not a mounting problem.
I'm using a Noctua D-14 HSF with my case fans loudly blowing a ton of air through the case...

their could be a lot of things going on first how much thermal paste are you using? second have you used mutiple sources for the tempature readings? or simply touched the bug with heatpipes to confirm it is indeed geting hot, because it sounds like a bug with your monitoring program

I've tried various amount of thermal paste just to be certain and same results. I've mounted countless CPUs in the past and never had a problem before too...
I used RealTemp and whatever application ASUS provided to monitor the temps from within Windows.
Looking on Intel's board it seems I'm not the only one with high temps too... https://communities.intel.com/thread/54422

Will touch the heatsink when home later and report back. This same exact setup on my old 2600k kept temps under 65C when *overclocked* yet I'm hitting close to 100C stock with the 4970! how can that be!

I've actually already done that. I tried different amounts of thermal paste too.
I've installed countless CPUs in the past and never had any issue before so I really don't think it is a mounting issue. I see there are some other users online reporting this same issue with their 4790k so I wonder if there is a bad batch?

Is there anyone on here who actually has a 4790k and can comment on the temps?

I've got the i7-4790K with the Corsair H100i http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009ZN2NH6 AIO water cooler attached. My temps don't break 70C at stock speeds and under full load from bench testing.

I've gone from the 2600K > 4770K > 4790K and will say that the 4790K does run hotter than most with Haswell being significantly hotter than Sandy Bridge overall. The temperatures you are getting are definitely much higher than they should be and something is wrong. My first suggestion is to check the mounting of your cooler. Make sure that nothing is keep the heatsink from being fully seated on the CPU and that there is good contact between the CPU and heatsink.

If all is well there, and I did see that you've reapplied paste numerous times, then you have a hardware issue whether it is with the CPU or the motherboard sensors. If you've tried another CPU on that board and not had problems then it is possible that it's the CPU. It's highly unlikely that it's the CPU and likely something is wrong with the cooler installation.

Haven't had a chance to try gaming on it yet (will try tonight when home) but shouldn't it be able to keep itself under 98C when using the AVX instructions? My old 2600k doesn't overheat like that with the latest prime95.

I've mounted many CPUs in the past and never had an issue and I've already remounted multiple times here. This is also my 2nd mobo as the first one I got had bad USB ports and high temps as well..
Have you tried running the latest Prime95 on your 4790k? About 4 minutes in it will make my CPU spike to 98C.

Lets try this again DONT NOT USE THE LATEST PRIME95.

I quit using Prime 95 a while ago. I've only been using AIDA and Intel XTU

I went and ran a few more benchmarks and heres the results I got. The latest Prime95 does cause it to ramp up 30C more but is that still ok? What about these other temps? Are those considered good?

Temps:
AIDA64: 75C max.
Intel Linpack Burn Test: 88C max.
Prime95 26.6 Small FFT test: 72C max.
Prime95 26.6 Blend test: 70C max.
Prime95 28.5 Blend test: 100C max.

Core Voltages:
Idle Voltage: 0.72V
AIDA64 voltage:1.264V
IntelBurnTest voltage: 1.264V
Prime95 26.6 Voltage: 1.248V
Prime95 28.5 Voltage: 1.264V

Intel burn test and the latest Prime95 uses AVX so those are not recommend for stress testing.
AIDA64, Prime95 26.6 and intel XTU are the way to go with Haswell.
Those are some pretty good temps considering your already at 4.4GHZ.

If youre still not happy with the temps.....?

1) Any luck in the BIOS readings ~etc?

2) Did you try an external thermometer?

3) When you put the CPU in, did you damage any of the extremely delicate contacts? Eeeeeeeeeeeeek short?

4) That themal paste sounds like a check worth...................to see if you can lower it a tad...

Well there´s another thing that maybe you need to try, from Ivy Bridge process to these new ones there´s known that they come with a cheap thermal paste between the IHS and the processor so this is causing high temperatures on them, so I think you should try to make a delid for it, it is a delicate process, but it definitely will help you, here´s a video of the process, is not in English but is the only one I found for the 4790k, you can look at the 3770k videos, there´s a lot for that chip and is the same process, the video show the razor method, but you should look also for the vice method:

sounds like he knows what he's doing. you have to do a comparative test but I don't think you have another i7-4790K laying around. If you could pop in another one the problem would be solved. If that chip got hot too then its the motherboard or software. If it didn't then the processor is faulty. 100C is way too high. I have the same processor but I've never seen temps go higher than 55C. I use IC Diamond thermal paste

With the new Haswell k series they fixed that problem. And only the k series?????
