Will I benefit in graphics processing power if I upgrade to GTX 970 single card? I currently have two HD 5850 running in crossfire.

My CPU is AMD 965, have 16GB ram, SSD, usual gaming grade machine.

If answer is no, which card do you suggest I upgrade to? I am looking for a single card solution that is preferably nVidia.

Do you mean the GTX 970 card clock speed (frequency) is higher than that of my CPU? I believe the Phenom X4 is 3.5 Ghz and the graphic cards are not even 1.5 Ghz. Also, don't most games utilize CPU only partially and are optimized for direct (Graphic) memory access? Either all this true or I don't understand this concept very well.

EDIT: I did a little reading on the internet and it seems that GPUs mine data faster than CPU anyway as the base frequency of a CPU (without taking into account the multiplier) is much lower. In that case, there should always be a bottleneck, no?

My CPU is running 5% higher than stock speed right now. I am not into serious overclocking but for fun I bumped it up from the motherboard BIOS menu. It does not make a noticeable difference in performance as you probably guessed.

I think it explains it very well.

Thank you. Very helpful.

However - "If your CPU is based on the LGA 1155 (2nd gen. Intel Core i3/5/7), LGA 1156 (1st gen. Intel Core i3/5/7), LGA 1366 (1st gen. Intel Core i7) or on the AMD AM3 sockets (Athlon II x3/x4 and Phenom II x2/x3/x4/x6), then CPU bottleneck is unlikely to be the cause of your low framerates."

Question then is, even if there is some bottleneck if I buy GTX 970, does the price justify an upgrade from the two HD 5850s? At least buying that card gives me an opportunity to stay current if and when I upgrade my CPU. How much do you think is the performance boost in percentage?

And if I go with GTX 760, how much would be the boost in percentage compared to HD 5850 in crossfire?

Thank you.
