Hey everyone!

My question is, will a XFX 450W PSU be adequate with a XFX Radeon HD 6950 (2GB)?

The recommended PSU for the HD 6950 is 500W. I'm intending to purchase the XFX 450W since I've seen a great deal on it. I've used various PSU calculators and a 450W should have more than enough headroom; it is estimated the system will use around 390W on full load.

The entire HTPC specs:
Intel Pentium G840
Gigabyte H77N-WIFI
Samsung 4GB DDR3-1600
XFX Radeon HD 6950
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM
Cooler Master Elite 130 (1 x 120mm fan, 1x80mm and 1 CPU fan)
Windows 8.1 Pro

I'll also connect a Logitech K400 and XBOX Controller. I'm just curious as to whether I should purchase the 450W PSU, and whether it'll be adequate; I'm not relying too much on the calculators.

Thank you! :D

That's all old info, they revised the psu and gave it only one pcie connector with it.It imo probably took too much away from the 550watt version.
If it's new it has only one,if it's a second hand can you be lucky and have one with two.
Going by the lists and test results I'd say you're doing that at absolutely your own risk.

500w is the stated minimum. That's after factoring that the component won't be operating at anything near 100% capacity except in extreme cases of massive RAID arrays or huge chains of charging USB devices.

It's far safer to purchase an 'overpowered' component that won't be operating at a potentially damaging (and certainly lifespan-shortening) 100% capacity than to risk it with something below the stated minimum.

Based upon all my previous research, including the Power Supply Calculator you have provided, a 450W should be more than adequate providing a heap of headroom (as mentioned in my initial post). The calculator you provided stated I need a minimum 253W PSU and recommended a 303W; hence 450W should be more than satisfactory, even more so as the XFX PSU I declared is manufactured by SeaSonic.

You're incorrect. 500W is the minimum recommended PSU after considering the load of the GPU at 100% and estimating the total wattage of other components too; hence why I'm asking if a 450W PSU would be adequate in my scenario, as I'm only building a minimal HTPC.

I won't have any RAID or "huge chains of charging USB devices" as mentioned, it's only a HTPC. I have posted the specifications on the original post.

Indeed I agree, that way the PSU won't have to run closer towards it's full load. Thank you very much for your opinion; I appreciate it. :)

I've used various calculators (as mentioned in my initial post), and they all conclude 450W provides more than enough headroom (as mentioned in my initial post). "The calculator you provided stated I need a minimum 253W PSU and recommended a 303W; hence 450W should be more than satisfactory, even more so as the XFX PSU I declared is manufactured by SeaSonic."

To conclude my own question, I suppose a 450W PSU is more than adequate for my HTPC build.

Thank you again for your response. :)

Thank you for your response.

The XFX 450W does indeed have 2 x PCI-E connectors (1 x 6 pin and 1 x 6+2 pin). Most sources only state it has 1 x 6+2 pin but don't mention the other 1 x 6 pin. Connectors are not an issue, there are two PCI-E connectors.

No problem, thank you very much for the information. I was unaware the second PCI-E connector was removed.

Instead of the XFX 450W PSU, I decided to purchase the EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze for £3 more. It's a shame to be honest, since I did find the XFX (OEM: SeaSonic, which is of higher "quality") unit for cheaper than the budget EVGA PSU; both brand new.

Thank you again.
