I was using windows in my desktop. Today I installed debian in my desktop where 16 GB free space was left for it. Unfortunately I got an error message that linux can not be installed in this partition. So I decided to remove windows 7 and install linux completely. So I deleted the partition of windows 7 and linux was installed completely. After installation it was not detecting my previous another two partitions where all my data were kept. It is detecting only the file system where it is installed. Remaining part is like does not exists. My all data and many important documents are missing. Then I tried to get the data back by installing windows again. but another big problem is that windows is not detecting HDD. Please give a solution. you can mail me anjan.k.suri@gmail.com.

You could download a copy of partedmagic (the free one if you can find it), burn it to disk, boot from it, and use TestDisk to try to recover your Win7 partitions with your data.

And there's no way Windows can't be detecting your drive if you had it on there in the first place and made no changes to your BIOS. I think you mean Windows setup sees the drive as already filled, which just means you'd have to departition the drive in Windows setup.

@knight_of_baawa, I tried the process you said but problem was not solved. No other OS except windows XP and Linux , is installing in the machine. I want to install windows 7 or higher and also I do not want to loss my previous data. If any solution found then please tell me how to solve it.

That's about all I can tell you. And again: there's no way Win7 won't install on it, but you have to departition and repartition the drive. Which means you're probably never going to get your data back.

Moral of the story: back up your stuff before you do anything drastic.
