HDD PCB Swap questions:

Hey everyone!

So I recently made the stupid mistake of plugging in the wrong AC adapter to my external hard drive, frying the PCB. I went and ordered an identical Hard Drive [Samsung ST4000DM000], and was hoping to swap out the PCB, and replace the firmware chip.

I've encountered a few issues so far:

For starters, the PCB firmwares don't match [identical drives, different manufacturing dates, etc], so I'm most likely going to have to order from a PCB website [I've found the identical model here.

I attempted to swap the PCBs anyways [probably a foolish move], and the hard drive spun up and was recognized by my computer! Granted, of course, it appeared as a non-forumated drive, and my PC wanted me to format it before using it.

My question is:

if I were to perform a quick format to render the drive usable...would it be possible to use data recovery software to pull what I need off the drive? Or would I be better off just waiting a few weeks to have the PCB sent back and forth and getting the firmware chip swapped?

Thank you in advance for all your help!

Thanks for the suggestion!

Upon running it on the drive, however, I receive "I/O Error "Unknown error (23)" reading sector 0 on DISK2 (RT#633)

I'm guessing this means that either the drive itself is borked, or more likely, I need to just carry out a proper PCB swap?

So upon s bit of further research, it seems that the replacement PCB is compatible with my hard drive, as long as the firmware chip is swapped of course.

This brings me to my next question:

Could anyone help me identify the chip? I understand that it is supposed to be an 8-pin chip, but there are two such chips on this board. I believe it to be the chip I have circled in red, but want to confirm with you guys before I go ahead and attempt the swap [or take it into a shop, should I be unable to get my hands on a heat gun]

Thank you for the suggestions!

I actually ended up performing the ROM chip swap myself, and it worked!
It was nerve wracking, as I'd assumed I would end up damaging the chip and losing everything, but thankfully in the end, the hard drive spun up and I copied all the data to two other drives.

Thanks for all your suggestions though!
