Xbox 360 Wireless Controller not connecting

I got my Xbox 360 a few years ago, but now I'm having problems with it,when I try connect the controller to the xbox, it flashes fast for a few seconds then the flash slows down and doesn't connect to the xbox, can someone tell me what to do without taking stuff apart?

press the sync button on the Xbox 360 (should be close to the power button) then press the sync button on the controller (if it is a microsoft made controller then it will be on the top by the left bumper) this often happens if the controller has been played on another system and was never synce back to your current system, maybe a friend borrowed the controller and you forgot to sync it back?
