You'll need a sound card, yes. Look at Asus's Xonar range, all of those are quality cards and they come in all shapes, sizes and prices.

EDIT: Something like this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Sound Card: Asus Xonar DSX 24-bit 192 KHz Sound Card ($54.99 @ Amazon)
Total: $54.99
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Or if you want to spend a little less:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Sound Card: Asus Xonar DGX 24-bit 96 KHz Sound Card ($37.99 @ NCIX US)
Total: $37.99
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

That one will still give you great audio, it's drawbacks are that it is just 5.1 instead of 7.1 and that is has a 96KHz sample rate, which is something only real audiophiles will hear and is really onnly important if you are an audio producer.

According to the specs here: http://www.fendaaudio.com/51_speakers/f3000f.html Your 5.1 set comes with cables that combine some speakers, so you should end up with 3 cables total. One for centre and subwoofer, one for front speakers, one for rear/side speakers. Most 5.1 sets work that way.

There's also a RCA to stereo cable, that one would fit in your current mobo but it would turn your 5.1 set into a glorified 2.0 set.

That might actually work. The mobo's sound chip is 7.1 capable, and footnote 2 here talks about how to configure 7.1: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4311#sp It's basically what you said, except with a front panel audio port to support the fourth cable.

so that would give dolby digital 5.1 effect? or regular all the speakers would give all the sounds?

Why buy a sound card when you could buy a DAC (Digital Audio Converter)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132067

The inside of a PC's case is a very unhappy home for any analog device... There is all sorts of electromagnetic interference bouncing around the interior of the case. You should get a DAC and set it on the opposite side of your desk. That way you would have a Crystal Clear amplified headphone jack at the ready too.

--------------------------------

By the way, if you're looking for the absolute best sound you can possibly get... You're better off with headphones in my opinion. If you're willing to get the DAC and drop a couple hundred on a pair.

The Bose QC 25 headphones are unbelievable! The active noise reduction is ridiculous! I could roll a cherry bomb into your computer room and you wouldn't hear it go off. $299

...And by the way... While you can do some pretty cool stuff with 5.1 and 7.1 audio, it's really overkill.

You have two ears... You need two speakers...

Don't believe me? Put on a pair of headphones, close your eyes, and play this video.

If the board supports Dolby Digital, and this method actually works, then it should give you full 5.1. Without Dolby Digital you'll still have 5.1, but getting 2.0 sources (most music etc.) to play at 5.1 can be a little tricky. Again assuming this actually works.

i have connected front right and left speakers via 2 female rca to 1 rca male cable to green port, rear right and left speakers to blue port and centre and sub woofer to pink port. i have selected the 5.1 option but in audio test i get sound through only front right and left speakers, what could be the problem?
