Hey guys. Im new to the pc scene and Im trying my first overclock. My goal is to push my cpu a little as I will be using my pc for everything: internet browsing, gaming, 3d design, watching movies, and doing schoolwork.

My specs are:
CPU Fx8350
CPU Cooler CM Seidon 120m
Radiator Fan CM Jetflo 120
MOBO Asus m5a97 R2.0
PSU 80 PLus Bronze Rated 750w
MEMO Gskill 8gb 2400
GPU Sapphire r9 270
Tower NZXT Phantom 410
Total of 5 fans excluding gpu fans.

Im planning on just using MSI Afterburner
Any tips and anyone have experience with this setup?? Any help would be appreciated :)

If the OC is unstable, you will get a hardware failure error message...

Thank you for the info. Couple more questions. What is a good tempereature for my cpu to run(just aiming for a slight overclock)? Im aiming for 4.5ghz for the cpu. Is this possible and safe?? And I checked the link and read it but it says it wont work with any AMD cpus? Thanks for the reply!

I tried using AMD Overdrive instead. It was stable around 4.0ghz and 4.1 ghz turbo. Pushed it up a little(4.3ghz) and put it through a stability test and bam blue screen. It said "possible hardware failure." Could this be my motherbard? My cpu was around 40-45C and thats a good temperature right?

If the OC is unstable, you will get a hardware failure error message. Nothing to worry about. It just means you have work to do on your OC's stability. But the FX-8350 should be stable at that small OC if all you did was raise the multiplier. Don't do too many changes at one time. Work on just the multi alone for now.

Don't forget to disable Turbo, C1E, and any other power saving functions in BIOS. Sometimes they can mess up an OC.

Great step by step! But the link for the dl does not work. And one more question why only overclock with the BIOS? Any specific reasons? And I heard changing the voltage to something higher degrades the life of the CPU...is this true?? Thank you so much :)

The dl link seems to be working for me, anyways download it from the link below.

overclocking via overdrive or any other software saves the settings into the BIOS while it's still running, hence its not reliable and can cause crashes/instability.

Overclocked settings changed in the Bios is saved when you exit it, hence its much better.

overclocking(overvolting) your cpu does degrades the life of the cpu, If done correctly & safely, it'll still last for years.
If you overclock the cpu more than your cooler can handle & run it @ very high temps 24/7, that should degrade the cpu much faster.
