Computer turned off suddenly

Hey everyone,

My computer switched off out of the blue while I was simply surfing with various tabs open, no games or anything.

My first thought was that it was the power supply (700w Casecom VP-700). The computer would only twitch the fans on everything, even the GPU but that's it. I've since taken a Corsair model 550w PSU and it turned on however it will only fire up and boot when the graphics card isn't connected. I did a system restore back to before the latest Catalyst Suite as I'd previously had a problem with that driver causing my computer to fail to wake up after sleep mode without a restart. I've been running the system as a whole without any other issues for a few months now.

System:

CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-H77M-D3H
GPU: Sapphire R9 270X 4gb Dual X
HDD: WD 1TB
RAM: 4x8gb
PSU: Casecom 700w VP-700
Case: Aerocool X-Predator
Cooler: CM Hyper 212x

Well, the first thing I would do is to see if all the fan cables are connected, because I accidentally disconnected my CPU fan and it kept shutting off due to overheating. Also check if there is any dust buildup around the heatsinks and fans.

I didn't try the 700w without it as the reviews I'd found afterward said that they're known for being awful and taking other parts with them. I was a tad worried that I would damage my other parts. I'm wondering whether it may have lost a cap and can't deliver enough power anymore to turn it on with the card.
But it does the same thing when with both PSUs with the card in. Everything twitches. All the fans are fine and working with the 550w without it though.

I could only put it in a computer with the same corsair 550w PSU I used to test earlier. However, I've since taken the 700w one to a shop and they did a quick test and told me it's a goner. Only putting out five volts or something like that.

I've put an order into get a replacement. I put in an order for a SilverStone 700w for $119. Which isn't bad in my Country.

If it persists after I put in the new PSU, I'll talk to them as they are the same company I got the GPU from.

I'm really hoping that's not the case. It's still under warranty, I just hope there wouldn't be any tell tale signs for that.
The fans twitch the same as the others like you would expect if you were using a system with a PSU that doesn't have enough power.
I guess I'll have to wait until it gets here to find out.

Yeah. I would say that might be it. I've put in the new PSU and the same result. I'll try with an old GT210 I have laying around to see if it does the same thing. I got an MSI z77 board in the post which I'd ordered cheaply before all of this happened. I'll connect that up and see if I can get it running on that in case it's the board even though there's no smell or anything.
If nothing, I could try to call the retailers tomorrow and see what they think about checking it out or replacing it.

I'll let you know.

Thanks everyone.

Hi All,

Firstly, I must offer my apologies for the lack of progress on this thread, as the RMA process took a very long time.

To update the situation though. After all of the testing, the company which I bought my card from ended up replacing my graphics card with a refurbished one. I was slightly disappointed with this as they first promised me a brand new one but the one I got was a refurbished one instead. However, the system now works with the replacement graphics card and new PSU.
I consider myself lucky as I'm not really sure what caused the problem and it's cheaper to replace a PSU in most instances than a GPU.

Thanks for your help everyone. :)
