Hey I've recently started a course at college for computer repair/ maintenance so am a noob. I thought I'd have ago a bringing an old emachines e4231 back to life so far I have upgraded the cpu And upgraded the bios, I will be putting more memory in it soon.
My question basically I bought a ati radeon hd 5450 from ebay got it for a good price so just went for it now it seems I messed up as when i install it I don't get any output from on board or graphics card from what I've read seems to contradict each other sum say should work others say won't due to power supply/ because my motherboard is only pcie 1.0 just need some help is there away to make it work?

My motherboard is an intel d945gccrg1

Update:
I read your comment again and realized mine wasn't quite accurate due to the CONFLICT you mention.

1) enter the BIOS and see if PCIE (or Auto) is selected. Change and Save if not.

2) Shut down and attach HD5450, and monitor to HD5450.

3) Start.

If you get no picture then I'd say the HD5450 is defective. I suppose there could be a PCIe v3-> v1 conflict but that's hard to say. I know some motherboard have issues despite technically the later cards being designed as backwards compatible.

The only way to confirm things now would be to try that card in a newer computer.

Regardless, if the above doesn't work you can't do anything about it except maybe try a different card. Not that you really need one since you have onboard video.
The card should work fine.

It may be broken so I'd suggest borrowing a different card if possible, or maybe someone can test that in a machine for you. They could even just add it as a secondary card if they have the slot and connect a monitor to it.

*To be clear, you did attach the monitor to the card itself?

Other:
How did you update the BIOS without video? I guess you had a different card or used onboard graphics. If so, it's obvious the rest of the computer works thus I see only THESE likely scenarios:

1. The BIOS is selected to use onboard video still.
You may need to reconnect the monitor to motherboard and change so PCIe (or Auto) is selected for graphics selection. Then shutdown, attach monitor to HD5450 and bootup.

2. Monitor is connected to motherboard but you have PCIe output in BIOS.
Switch monitor to video card.

3. Card is defective.

I used the on board graphics to Update the bios and Yes I plugged the monitor into the card, and probably should have mentioned I did change the bios setting to auto it's just strange as boots up just no output no beeps to say something is wrong I'll have to get a friend to test it for me
Thanks for the suggestions though thought I was missing something really simple
