I just bought my gigabyte gtx 980 g1 and it requires two 8 pin power connectors. I have the corsair CS650M power supply. My PCI connectors only have a 6 pin and a 8 pin, what do I do?

Solution

You mean you have two cables with 8pin and 6 pin? If so you can use both cables and only use the 8 pins.

I didn't understand that.

*Your PSU is supposed to have 2x8-pin (6+2) so there shouldn't be a need for adapters.

UPDATE:
I see the problem... they use the SAME 8-pin for your CPU so you don't have the second 8-pin.

My advice is to use the two 6-pin outputs with an adapter. Thus 2x6-pin to 8-pin. I'm unsure if their connectors are proprietary on the PSU end so look at your graphics card and PSU to see if your 8-pin cable would manage.

The other option is to split the 8-pin however that's dangerous unless you know it's tied to a SINGLE RAIL (since the PSU has enough power for that).

The 2x6-pin adapter method should work though.

I just updated my post, but if you look at his PSU it does have 2x8-pin outputs but one of those is likely used by his CPU. Here's a picture:

So again, I think he needs to use the 2x6-pin adapter.

It is a semi modular unit with 4+4 CPU (EPS) already hard wired with the 24 pin on the PSU so he can use both those.

rolli59,
I see. My mistake.

It was hard to tell from pictures, but now I see that the "4+4" is indeed hard wired next to the 24-pin master power cable. That makes a lot more sense.

*Since he has 2x8-pin obviously available then which is all his card needs, I'm a little confused what the initial problem was since I see no reason why any adapters would be needed then.

He initially said he only had a "6-pin and 8-pin" which is clearly not the case so it would be nice to get a response if possible to clear this up. I didn't quite understand his last explanation but clearly he's got things working now...

(I would have assumed he had two, 2+6-pin cables)

I believe the confusion is that the PSU he got apparently has 2 cables each having a 6+2 and a 6pin.

hello I bought this and EVGA 1000 power supply and Gigabyte GTX 980 the GTX 980 got molex but 4 of them not wired the EVGA got special red wire marked for VGA but the problem is that all the pins in the EVGA cable are wired so if i connect the red EVGA wire which got all 8 pins wired would damage my GTX 980 since all its 8 instead of 6 got wired thanks
