Hello everybody,
I currently have windows xp pro sp2 on my 1.8 GHz 1 GB RAM computer with 40 GB hard disk (IDE; my computer supports SATA as well but I don't have any SATA drive yet). I tried to install windows 7 (from the hard disk itself - I have two partitions), but I get an error that says "Windows cannot be installed on this disk. Windows needs the driver for device [Primary IDE channel]. Click 'load driver' and load the required device driver."

I cannot find the device driver anywhere. I checked in device manager for the existing drivers of the primary IDE channel and the hard disk. It shows disk.sys and partmgr.sys for the hard disk in c:\windows\system32\drivers folder and IdeChnDr.sys in c:\windows\system32\drivers for the primary IDE channel. When I try to load those drivers in the windows 7 installation, it won't take those files. (the setup takes only the .inf files which were from the windows xp setup folder but none of them is compatible with my hardware; but they were compatible for installing windows xp :( ).

I meet the system requirements of windows 7 and yet unable to install it. I'd be grateful for any help.
Thanks for your time.

P.S. I have seen similar problems in other threads but without solutions and some of the solutions did not work for me.

That's because you are trying to do the impossible!

You can't install Windows 7 in the way you are trying to do it without first making use of a second computer as shown here:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Install-Windows-7-without-USB-or-DVD-without-upgra/

Without that, you must run the Windows 7 Setup from bootable media (DVD or USB pen drive). Install from DVD, guide here: http://www.wikihow.com/Install-Windows-7-for-Beginners
Install from USB pen drive, guide here: http://www.wikihow.com/Install-Windows-7-Using-Pen-Drive

I had tried to install windows 7 from a DVD drive previously, but encountered the same error. Though I haven't done it from a pen drive, I doubt it will work at all, but I'll try it once.

I think if I can find the right driver for the primary ide channel, I might be able to install it from the hard disk itself.

When I tried to install from the pen drive, I encountered an error that says "Invalid system disk, replace the disk and then press any key"
If I install from a DVD I get the same error - "Windows needs the driver for device [Primary IDE channel]"
