i7-4790k + Kraken x61 Overheating

I recently finished a desktop build with an i7-4790k and an NZXT Kraken x61 280 mm radiator. However, recently the CPU has been exhibiting extreme temperatures under load, and I believe it has also been the cause of repeated shutdowns during gaming.

Idle temperatures hover around 38-40 C, but running Prime 95 temperatures exceed 90 C within 6.5 minutes, and show no sign of slowing down. The CAM software indicates that coolant loop temperatures only change by four degrees when under load, from 36 to 40. I've reapplied the thermal paste several times and there doesn't seem to be a change.

The most noticeable symptom outside of stress testing is that the computer will suddenly shut off when playing large 10v10 rounds of Wargame: Red Dragon. Smaller games of 3v3 or 4v4 are unaffected, either against the AI or human players, as are other games (e.g. Rome 2).

Previously 10v10s ran fine but a week ago my building switched off the AC to heating (which I haven't used since it's still relatively warm), so ambient room temperatures increased about 10 degrees or so. Since then, 10v10s have always resulted in crashes relatively quickly.

I haven't changed any of the stock CPU settings since the cooling issue was never resolved. Bios and drivers should be up to date. Case cooling should be alright, it has six fans and is only about a month old so dust accumulation is minimal (especially given the dusting it's received every time I've opened it to try to diagnose the problem). I'll try to track down the stock cooler and swap it in for a test, but I was wondering if anyone else had any suggestions or ideas.

System specs:
Case: Cooler Master HAF XM
Motherboard: Asus Maximus VII Hero
CPU: Intel i7-4790k
Cooler: NZXT Kraken x61
GPU: Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Vapor-X
Storage: Crucial MX100 512 GB, WD Black 4 TB, Seagate Barracuda 3 TB
PSU: EVGA Supernova 1000 P2 1000 w

Thanks!

Try Reset cmos (short jumper or battery removal). Try run RealTemp and CoreTemp, see the temps margin while doing the same activity..

I read great reviews on NZXT Kraken x61 and its should lower down cpu better than that result... Or you may have to re-apply your thermal paste (Arctic silver 5 is better). Ensure cooler heatsink is well seated.

Thanks for the response.

Tried it with Prime95 v 26.6 SFF and used RealTemp to measure the temps.

From an idle temp of ~36 C, temps reached between 85-96 C at the ten minute mark, depending on the core when running in silent mode. When running the test in performance mode the temps topped out at the 81-90 degree mark.

Accounting for a ~5 C difference between the recommended ambient of 22 C and the actual ambient of closer to 27 C, it still seems to be running hotter than recommended (80-91 C/76-85 C).
