as above I installed on a new HDD (WD 4TB) and everything worked out fine windows initially booted just fine however when I restarted for some updates it starts up windows boot manager and from them my keyboard disables at the login screen preventing me from logging in. If I boot straight to the drive it claims I need to insert boot media and restart.

Please help and thanks in advance!

Sounds like their is a conflict in the type of install you performed. You probably need to reinstall using the Custom option and delete all existing partitions on the drive, recreate a single partition and then install to that partition.

Prior to that make sure AHCI is enabled in the BIOS as that's what Windows 8 wants to see when using the SATA controllers so it can create the correct boot record. Other boot record types will sometimes work and sometimes not.
