Ok, I know this has been asked a billion times on here, but I still cant quite get my head round this. Im planning to build my first gaming PC (sidenote-WOOT WOOT!) and ive been looking at windows 8. But lots of people have said that I need to have windows 7 already installed on the PC, which i am not going to have. Can I still install Windows 8 from scratch, on a completely OS free PC, or do i need to get Windows 7 first and download that on the PC, then install Windows 8? Thanks to anyone that answers, and sorry for my inept knowledge. This is my first build, and all my friends seem to despise Windows 8 and just got Windows 7 so I am relying on you guys (no pressure hehe). Thanks

and dont listen to them about how windows 8 sucks. get windows 8 and upgrade to 8.1 for free. i love windows 8, and ive used both 7 and 8 for several years a piece. if theyre the same price, get 8. you will supposedly be able to upgrade to windows 10 for free, too, if you have windows 8.

You do not need to have Windows 7 to install Windows 8 or 8.1 so long as you purchase the full version and not the upgrade version.

This, or the equivalent for your country:

As of yet I've seen no evidence that MS intends to offer Windows 10 upgrades for free to anybody. It was supposedly going to be the case before they went straight to Windows 10 instead of Windows 9 but since they announced they were skipping 9 I've seen nothing to indicate that users of 8 are going to be eligible for any kind of upgrade program. Perhaps they will, but I wouldn't bet the house on it.

I've seen rumors of Win 10 being 'free' to current Win 8/8.1 owners, and cheapish for Win 7 owners....but that's all they are...rumors. There has been no official proclamation from MS on this.

Specific rumors here:

and here:
http://www.computerworld.com/article/2825116/free-at-last-after-windows-10-consumers-wont-pay-for-updates-or-upgrades.html

For Win 7 or 8? Don't listen to your friends. Actual performance is quite similar, just the UI is different.

Will it be a smooth process?
No, it will be a complete nightmare for the first six months, followed by another six months of semi-nightmare. Drivers, applications and general use will be problematic until after the first year at which time we will release a major service pack that will address all the previous issues but create an equal number of new ones. Right about the time we get everything running smoothly we'll be sure to release another version and make all hardware vendors dependent on it so we can start the process again. How stupid do you think we are at MS, we're never going to program ourselves out of the equation.

Heh, or something like that.
