I don't mean to spam. I just wanted to repost a thread because my last one did not get as much traction (which I strongly believe is due to me posting it really late) and I'm really desperate for help. I'm seriously distraught by this problem. I planned this build for nearly two years saving and researching. I have a disillusioned feeling since I did not mentally prepare myself for the worst. I only thought of a good outcome.

For my first build I decided to do an external build instead of throwing everything in the case (Thank God). The problem I'm having with it is that there is no information displaying on my monitor. Strangely enough, my hardware is running. I know this because the fans on my PSU, CPU cooler, and GPU fan and LED are running. No hissing or turbulent sounds, only a nice smooth humming sound.

If you are interested in helping me then refer to the MSI Motherboard Manual. Third download from the bottom that is 7.29 MB is the manual.

What is happening:

External build is not displaying any BIOS or information even when hardware is running fine.

What I've tried so far:

  • Took out both RAM chips
    Took out one RAM chip
Moved one RAM chip to another DIMM slot
Moved both RAM from DIMM1 and DIMM 2 to DIMM 3 and DIMM4
Took out dGPU to run from iGPU
Reset the CMOS for 25 minutes
Used VGA cable from motherboard to monitor (I did not connect the VGA to the GPU because it does't have one. It only has 1xHDMI, 2xDVI, and 3xDisplayPort.
Used HDMI from motherboard to monitor
Used HDMI from motherboard to GPU
Did not use DVI or DisplayPort because my GPU did not come with one.

What I think might be faulty:

  • CPU—Not sure if the method of which I installed the CPU cooler might have potentially damaged it.
Motherboard— I did not take the time to check the pins if they were damaged. The motherboard is also not illuminating my K70. I plugged it into my newly purchased laptop and it illumined without having to install drivers so I assume an area near the I/O ports have been damaged.
CPU Cooler—I might have installed the standoffs too tightly.

Have you by chance tried a different monitor? Have you checked to make sure that the monitor is set to use the correct input that you have connected to the PC. I doubt the CPU is bad b/c your BIOS would give a CPU error.

Yeah I guess it isn't a CPU or motherboard issue since it would probably be displaying an error on the monitor.

I have an old 1050p monitor from a prebuilt Dell desktop computer. I'll hook it up to the external build and see what happens.

A bad motherboard could very likely not display anything if it was bad, since that is what sends the video signals at boot-up. I haven't downloaded your mobo manual, but does it have a built in speaker? If so, are you getting any beeps when you first power on?

My motherboard included an SLI bridge instead of a motherboard POST speaker so I went to Fry's to purchase one. The manual says to plug it into the JFP2 pins since it says Speaker/Buzzer. I plugged it in and I didn't hear anything. I flipped the speaker around and nothing happened. Not hearing any beeps. Also, how loud are the beeps suppose to be?

The dGPU disables the iGPU... remove it and see if that helps... at some point you did take it out, but it sometimes takes a while for the monitor to switch video format... that may be why you didn't see it display...

If/while the montiro doesn't receive a signal you can see on display it searches for a Digital or Analog signal, and if it does receive a signal but it's stuck in the last video format, the display remains blank.

Remove the dGPU and use the onboard video only... and shutdown the monitor to reset it.

Pretty loud. You will definitely hear the beeps over any fans running

CPU cooler fan is running. I connected it to the CPU_FAN1 slot.

That's weird. I put my ear about half an inch away from the speaker and heard nothing.

I installed an i5‑4690K into the CPU socket. I made sure the notches and gold triangles are aligned. It made a snug fit so I'm sure I didn't mess up the CPU installation.

Hmm one possible reason its not going its a haswell refresh. And the BIOS thats on the mobo now doesnt support it. It needs BIOS 2.1

If this isnt on it now its not going to do anything

I thought Z97 are designed to work with the Haswell Refresh right out of the box.
